A half-dozen vehicles stopped for a few seconds then continued on. A martial eagle in a tree. Nothing too special to see here.
What they didn’t notice were the calls. They didn’t notice the spur-fowl grasped in the massive talons of the eagle’s left leg. They didn’t notice that the huge raptor wasn’t eating. It just kept calling.
I stopped because I noticed. My clients and I listened. We watched, because I accept every gift a safari gives me, large or small, cat, elephant or bug. We stopped and waited for nature’s story to unfold.
I heard the replying calls before I spotted the juvenile eagle flying in from the right to a tree two hundred meters away. I knew it would come to the adult. Once chicks fledge, they don’t go back to the nest, but they still rely on their parents for food. That’s exactly what was happening here, what everyone else was too impatient to wait for, what everyone else missed.
These are the photos my clients and I took because I stayed, watched and waited. You deserve more than a “checklist scramble” on your safari. You deserve to see the entire moment unveiled. You deserve to watch the wildlife you paid to see.
