CAPTAIN CAIRNS - LEADING THE ICE

There’s a new ‘C’ leading the Polar Bears into 2026-27, but Kate Cairns is certainly no stranger to being counted on when the Winnipeg Ice need her most.

Returning for another season with the defending MFHLU18AAA champions, Cairns brings speed, leadership and a relentless 200-foot game to an Ice roster welcoming a new crop of young talent.

She can be a weapon offensively one moment and be racing back to support her defence the next. That versatility was on display Wednesday as the Ice faced the University of Jamestown Jimmies in exhibition action. Despite going up against an older and more experienced ACHA Division I squad, Cairns helped the Ice stay right in the fight.

That should be an encouraging sign of what may be coming as the season draws closer.

If Winnipeg’s young roster can already go toe-to-toe with collegiate competition, imagine what this group could become once the MFHL season gets underway.

Cairns already knows what it takes to win.

During last season’s championship run, No. 12 elevated her game when it mattered most, recording 7 goals and 10 assists for 17 points in 14 playoff games, finishing second on the Ice in postseason scoring.

A challenge befitted for a new Captain?

With a younger group surrounding her, Cairns won’t simply be counted on to produce offence. She’ll be counted on to set the pace, lead by example and show the newest Polar Bears what championship hockey looks like.

The letter on the front of her jersey may be new, but her leadership behind it isn’t.

Captain Cairns is ready to lead the Ice. 🐻‍❄️❄️

PHILLIPS - ANCHORING THE BLUELINE

Isaak Phillips quietly put together the best professional season of his career in 2025-26, emerging as one of the most dependable pieces on the Manitoba Moose blueline.

The Barrie, Ontario product, who represented Team Jamaica at the 2018 U20 Team Elite Prospect Tournament, took a major step offensively, recording a career-high 29 points with 10 goals & 19 assists in 67 games. His 29 points led all Moose defencemen, while his 136 shots ranked second among Manitoba blueliners.

At 6-foot-3 & 205 pounds, Phillips brings size, mobility and valuable professional experience to a defensive group that continues to develop around him.

Originally selected 141st overall in the fifth round of the 2020 NHL Draft by Chicago, Phillips spent parts of five seasons with the Rockford IceHogs and served as an alternate captain before being acquired by Winnipeg in January 2025.

Perhaps most importantly, Phillips isn’t simply an AHL veteran waiting for an opportunity. He already has NHL experience on his resume, having appeared in more than 60 games at hockey’s highest level.

That gives Winnipeg another valuable layer of organizational depth.

Whether he’s anchoring the Moose blueline or getting the call to Winnipeg when injuries create an opening, Phillips has already demonstrated that he can step in when needed.

At 24, there may still be another level to his game.

Dependable, experienced, and coming off his best professional season yet.

It’s going to be a busy Thursday - as we will be at two locations to kick off our shooting season.

First up we have the University of Jamestown vs the Winnipeg Ice at the Hockey For All Centre / 2:45pm.

THE VETERAN VLAD

As the Winnipeg Jets continue to build around a younger core, there remains great value in keeping experienced players in the organization, and Vladislav Namestnikov fits that role very well.

Entering his 14th NHL season, Namestnikov has experienced nearly everything the league can offer, the Jets being his 7th team. His versatility can prove especially valuable to developing players such as Brad Lambert, who he has played with previously on the 3rd line.

Namestnikov provides stability. He can play centre or wing, move between lines, contribute defensively and provide offence when called upon. More importantly, he understands the preparation and consistency required to remain in the NHL for well over a decade.

His 2024–25 campaign demonstrated that he could still produce. Namestnikov recorded 38 points in 78 games, his second-highest total in the NHL and only 6 shy of his career-best 44 points he registered with Tampa Bay in 2017–18.

Beyond the scoring totals, his work away from the puck has carried considerable value. Since arriving in Winnipeg during the 2022–23 season, Namestnikov has compiled a combined plus-31 rating. While plus-minus never tells the entire story, that number reflects a veteran who has generally helped the Jets control play, coming out ahead when he is on the ice.

Namestnikov also provides Winnipeg with lineup flexibility. He can support skilled players, take defensive assignments or help settle a younger line when mistakes inevitably happen. For someone like Lambert, playing beside a veteran who understands positioning, responsibility and the rhythm of an NHL season could be invaluable.

Depending on where the dust settles before the puck drops on this new season, the Veteran Vlad could play an important role, not only in the lineup, but in helping prepare Winnipeg’s next generation.

No matter what - this is . The complexity of what’s unfolding should not distract from the passion countless fans feel for this franchise. Through ups and downs, loyal fans will continue to love this team - and not allow the politics to push a narrative.

Pro sports are very fluid & there is a reason why they’re modelled the way they are - you almost literally need a degree to be heavily involved.

For the rest of us - even passionate photojournalists, we find a way to find the positives in what we have.

You the fans continue to fill the seats, and the journalists (should hopefully) find a way to tell the positive story.

So now we know.

Regardless of whatever has gone down in the last 6 months, or the playoffs - it doesn’t take away from the fact that Connor Hellebuyck was a franchise player here.

The nature of the sport can be cruel in some respects, but Hellebuyck is the guy who backstopped the Jets to countless amazing Wins.

There are many moving parts in Pro Sports, and unless you’re the player, team, or agent - no one truly knows until a source makes a fact official.

Wherever he goes - we wish him the best of luck, and I am sure many are waiting with baited breath to see how the Jets are transformed through this chapter.
