atop hilltops and through pines

I scrambled partway up a rocky slope to get this view looking up at a ram through the branches. I loved the way the pine branches framed him, and from this angle he looked especially regal and confident. With the rut coming up, the rams should be getting more active, and I’m looking forward to spending more time photographing them this winter!

golden in grizzly country

The last light of the day caught this grizzly sow as she made her way through golden fall colors along the rocky bank of a river. It’s not a bear I recognize, and she looked incredibly healthy, with a round belly and a thick winter coat filling in. She had such an intense expression and never took her eyes off my direction as she carefully traversed the rocks before disappearing into the thick brush.

a windblown balancing act

This great gray owl was perched atop a small lodgepole pine, scanning the meadow below for prey, when a sudden strong gust of wind caught it off guard. The owl lost its balance and dramatically threw out its wings to steady itself on the swaying treetop. It was a rather ungraceful moment for a bird that is usually so elegant, but it made for a pretty entertaining moment to photograph, swipe to see another shot!

sunlight and shades of fall

This grizzly bear was out in the middle of the afternoon, digging through the low growing red vegetation beneath a hillside covered in fall colors. The afternoon sunlight made the colors seem even more vivid, and the bear’s already light coat looked even lighter in the sun. Everything about this scene felt like fall in Yellowstone, and to make it even more special, this was a bear I’d never photographed before.

long tines and a stride to match

This guy is of the most unique bull moose I’ve ever seen. His antlers are unusually spindly, with very little of the broad paddling you typically see on mature bulls. Some of his long, narrow points almost remind me more of elk antlers than moose. He was moving with determination, his head held high as he crossed the creek, made his way through the willows, and eventually disappeared into the pines. Such an interesting bull to come across!

black wolf on a gray afternoon

There’s something about dark, stormy skies that I’ve always loved, especially when photographing wildlife. This black wolf was standing atop a hilltop overlooking other members of the pack who were resting nearby. Its dark coat stood out against the soft gray sky, and the dead tree added even more to the scene, giving it an almost eerie feeling. To me, this scene feels like a classic fall day in Yellowstone.

wildness with a delicate side

There was something especially striking about this young female grizzly as she cautiously made her way across a hillside. She’s on the smaller side, with such delicate features and a gorgeous face. She moved with such intention and grace, slowly working her way through the sage and grass while carefully taking in everything around her.

autumn’s fleeting colors in the valley

I’d been wanting to photograph a bison with the fall colors in Lamar Valley, especially once the cottonwoods on the valley floor turned such a vivid gold that they almost seemed to glow. After several days of trying to get the shot I had in mind, I started worrying the fall colors would fade before I got my chance. However, everything finally came together one evening. The late evening light cast a warm golden hue across the entire valley, and this bull on the outskirts of a herd turned and walked perfectly in front of a distant stand of cottonwoods.
