๐จ๐ฆ Windsor's Little Italy โ The Story Behind the Clock Tower! ๐ฎ๐น
Have you ever noticed this beautiful clock tower at the roundabout on Erie Street East and Parent Avenue in Windsor?
It's more than just a landmark. It honours a doctor who made a lasting difference in the community!
๐๏ธ A tribute to a beloved doctor: The Dr. Lazarus Jovanovic Memorial Clock Tower was approved in 2017 to honour a physician who served Windsor residents for approximately 50 years.
โค๏ธ A doctor who cared: Dr. Jovanovic was known for making house calls, working late into the night and helping immigrant families. He sometimes provided medical care free of charge, especially during the years before Ontario's public health insurance system.
๐ฐ๏ธ An impressive landmark: Standing approximately 33 feet tall, the limestone-and-concrete monument was designed to become a distinctive feature of Windsor's historic Via Italia district.
๐ฎ๐น A neighbourhood rich in history: Erie Street has long been the heart of Windsor's Italian community, with generations of immigrants helping establish its restaurants, shops, churches and cultural traditions.
๐ด Did you know? Erie Street is also famous for the Tour di Via Italia bicycle races, a Windsor tradition dating back to 1958!
Today, the clock tower stands as a reminder of the people who helped shape Windsor's multicultural history.
