Over the years I have had photographers reaching out to me asking me how I get so many epic poses in my newborn lifestyle sessions. Three most common mistakes I see newborn photographers make when they first start out. 👇🏼
1. Rushing the baby - This is the BIGGEST ONE. Newborn sessions usually never run on time. They run on baby’s time. My golden rule 90% soothing / 10% shooting. I stand by this since 2013. Babies need extra time for feeding, changing and snuggling. Moms also need this time to not feel rushed. My sessions run from 1-3 hours.
2. Prioritizing poses over safety - (especially in studio sessions) often photographers/clients want to recreate images they see online, uneducated in what goes into taking these shots. Most are composites, understanding when baby is unsettled, needs extra support to head/neck is all essential to creating photographs that look effortless.
3. Understanding light - (I think this is key in photography in general) - for lifestyle sessions in particular, you walk into the unknown in terms of what kind of lighting situation you will get. Learning to understand light, as well as having proper gear to help you tell the families story will also make a nice photo into an epic piece of art.
With over 500+ newborn sessions under my belt, each one is always a chance to learn something new and push myself further.
Thanks for the years of support
