For Women’s History Month, we’re remembering Maud Lewis, a self-taught Nova Scotian artist whose paintings brought colour to scenes from everyday life.

Long before her paintings hung in galleries, Maud sold them from the tiny house she shared with her husband, Everett, beside the road in Marshalltown. A hand-painted sign reading “Paintings for Sale” invited passing travellers to stop.

Those who did found a one-room home without electricity or indoor plumbing, its walls, doors and household objects coming alive beneath Maud’s brush.

Rheumatoid arthritis made movement increasingly difficult, but Maud continued to paint. Oxen, cats, sleighs, flowers and familiar Nova Scotia scenes appeared in bright colours, each one offering a glimpse of the world as she chose to see it.

Today, her original painted house is preserved at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. But you can still get a peek into Maud’s world here in Digby County.

On Digby Neck, retired fisherman Murray Ross built a life-size replica of the Lewis home. Murray had known Maud and Everett as a child, and spent about a year researching the house before recreating its painted interior, furnishings and Everett’s workshop.

The closer you look, the more remarkable Maud’s world becomes.
