With the summer issue of The Yukon Magazine right around the corner, it’s about as good a time as any to look back at this -45c photoshoot last December! 🥶
For my story on bioacoustics featured in the current issue, I really wanted to capture some interesting portraits of folks recording nature sounds in the environment. The good news was that two of my interviewees, Dayo Osinubi and Allan Code were working on a collaborative project on American Dipper birds and could make for a great dual portrait.
The bad news? The best day for the shoot just happened to be two days before Christmas… and a legitimate -45c pre-windchill.
But we persevered and headed up to Fish Creek, where sure enough we found several American Dippers doing their thing around a thin strip of open water. Despite the extreme cold temperatures, I was super happy with how these portraits turned out - and balanced the story-telling with indoor portraits I captured in much warmer temps. I’m still thrilled to have this little nerdy niche topic featured in the magazine!
