Happy Mother's Day! If you're lucky enough to be able to, give your mom a big bear hug today! For those that aren't, I hope you're able to hang on those memories tightly ❀.

Here's a shot from last Friday night's solar storm, which went through the early hours of Saturday. I haven't been out with the camera much over the past few months, so I was thrilled to get back out under some clear skies. (Click for full view)

Leafcutter ants are an incredible species, with a complex hierarchy and a division of labour that would make Henry Ford jealous. Some of their roles include gardeners, guards, and foragers - like the one in this image. It was amazing to see thousands of them work together to transport sliced and diced leaves back to their nest en mass.

They were incredibly challenging to photograph as they moved FAST, and when zoomed in tight like this they were in & out of the frame in a fraction of a second.

A small green lizard basks in the Costa Rican sunlight, against a backdrop of deep shade. With the high contrast in the scene, it almost makes it look like a highly edited image, but I promise - only minimal edits!

The diverse and unique insects of Costa Rica provided a great opportunity to brush up on some macro photography. Here are a couple shots of a praying mantis looking for prey, just outside of where we were staying.

An adult howler monkey scans the rainforest canopy high above me. Fun fact: the howler monkey is the loudest mammal in North & South America. If you've ever heard their call, this fact wouldn't surprise you.

Another fun find in Costa Rica that wasn't on the list: Hermit Crabs.πŸ¦€πŸš

It's true - hermit crabs actually do trade shells with other hermit crabs. After I took these images, it disappeared into a dark crevasse, where I imagine a bustling buy & sell shell marketplace with dim lighting, neon signs, and bass music pumping 🎢.

An adorable young howler monkey makes eye contact while exploring the rainforest canopy high above me. While they were easy to hear, they were hard to photograph as they were constantly moving through thick cover, and up against the harsh light coming through. While this sighting was brief, I may share a few more shots from my time with these captivating cousins.

The aptly named Glasswing butterfly, clinging to a flower low on the dimly lit rainforest floor. It's always a treat to see something new, and a species that is unique to the region.

Time to shift gears back to wildlife, and get caught up on some images from Costa Rica back in August. One of the best parts of the trip is seeing species unique to Central America, such as the blue jeans frog 🐸. About the size of a thumb but full of colour, with an oily surface that is poisonous if ingested ☠!
