My feed has been full of gardeners getting us ready for the season so I thought I’d jump on the bandwagon. Although, I’m not really trying to convince you I know a ton about flowers… I just really love astilbe and think that you should maybe think about growing them too if you have a shady spot in your yard because I can almost guarantee they will make you happy 😉🌾

In other news, my husband bought a 3-pack of gardening gloves at Costco for cheaper than a pack of pimple patches. Make that make sense.

On our recent trip to Alberta, for some reason, we saw multiple hawks as they were diving down for their prey. I’ve never seen that many hawks, on one road trip, hunting like that. So we got a little obsessed with spotting them out the window to watch what they’ll do. (We also got to watch an Osprey hunt for fish while having supper on an outdoor patio in Calgary!)

My parents live in a small village in southern Alberta, and you pretty much have to drive to the nearest town to get most of the things you need. We take the same highway each time, and each time we drove by a particular grove of trees, these two hawks were hunting and gliding high up on the breeze.

On our last trip by this grove of trees, we slowed right down, hoping to see our new friends one last time before we left. They weren’t gliding above the trees like usual, so I thought maybe they were hanging out in the trees.

I spotted them in this tree, pulled the car over, and grabbed my camera. Not realizing at first that they were sitting by their nest, I tried to get a bit closer. The male got very mad at me, flew away, and started yelling at me from a telephone pole. But the female remained firm in her resolve, sitting quietly above her nest, until I left her alone. I didn’t get too close - I really didn’t want to disrupt their space, but I did get a few pictures!

I’ve never seen a “hawk family” before, so this was pretty cold for me. I also used to think that a hawk was a hawk for the most part - but I have learned that these are probably Swainson’s Hawks (please correct me if I’m wrong!). My kids have a “Notice Nature” book from the library so we will happily mark this one off!

The “Summer of the Paddleboard” has become quite a pleasing summer. We spent a glorious afternoon at Kananaskis Upper Lake when we were in Alberta. 10/10 recommend spending the day here!

I’ve known this graduate since he was a wee little baby. He is now all grown up, but still gives me a big hug whenever I see him. When he was little, I remember him and my husband having some hot debates over whether it was banana vs. blana 🥹

I’ve now photographed both siblings for their graduation! And I think it is pretty special that I’ve been able to be friends with their momma for that long ❤️ Hooray for making it through and hooray for parents who have crossed the high school finish line! 🎉

I don’t often do photo sessions these days, but every once in a while a friend will ask and I happily pull out my camera! This session was so life-giving for me and I had such a wonderful time trying some new things and leaning into my creativity.

This was a beautiful graduate, from an equally beautiful family, and it was a honor to be able to capture this special moment in time for them ❤️.

Cranberry Flats was quite the sensory experience today - cranes squawking as they migrate overhead, hundreds of crocus dotting the landscape like carpets of purple… and so many ticks crawling all over us, along with children shrieking because of said ticks 😂

This might be my last trip to places without trails for a while! If I was a “proper” nature-lover, I might say something about learning to live with them, but I hate ticks so much. I grew up with them and I still have not learned to live with them. I actually told my kids on the way home that logically, ticks aren’t that bad as long as you find them quickly. But I have an irrational fear of them and have probably instilled that fear into my kids 🤷‍♀️.

Good luck to you all who venture to those wild places - I’ll see you in a month! 😆
