Sorry for the very long post but there are some adventures in life that you know you will remember forever… and our time in Juneau was definitely one of them.❤️
We were incredibly fortunate to have friends who made it possible for us to experience Alaska in a way most people never get to. Heather and Ed, owners of Ward Air, along with Matt and Colette, opened the door to some truly extraordinary adventures!!
With Ed at the controls as a bush pilot, we were able to fly into remote places deep in bear country, far from roads, crowds and anything resembling a tourist trail.
Our first adventure took us to Hoonah, Alaska, where we spent most of the day sitting quietly along a riverbank, watching and waiting for the bears to appear.
We had seen a bear in the distance and had moved farther down the river to photograph it. We had left our backpacks on the riverbank behind us, completely unaware that we were about to have some very unexpected company.
While we were photographing the bear, a mama bear and her two cubs quietly appeared right behind us.
There we were… watching them, while they were watching us.
And unfortunately, our backpacks were between us and the bears, so there was absolutely no way to simply stroll back and get them.😂
Mama Bear got into Collette's backpack & made a mess but no equipment was harmed!
The cubs went to mine and for one it was apparently LOVE at first sight.🥰 There was no food, bars, drinks in it at all, just some equipment & clothes.
He sat nose-to-nose with it, then laid his head on it, rolled his little head around, and eventually settled down beside it as though he had found himself the finest bear pillow in all of Alaska.
I photographed the entire adorable encounter.
When Mama decided it was time to move along, the two cubs apparently decided my backpack should come with them. They started investigating it a little too enthusiastically, and we finally had to intervene and convince them that my backpack was, in fact, staying behind.😂
It was funny, a little nerve-wracking, and absolutely unforgettable.
And this was only the beginning of our Juneau adventures…

We haven’t fallen off the face of the Earth… we’ve just been completely swept up in one incredible adventure after another! 🐻📸

Never in my life did I think I would see, never mind photograph, bears and their cubs like we have over the past couple of weeks. I feel incredibly privileged to have been given these little glimpses into their world! I now have also such an appreciation for a Mama Bear with Cubs especially one that has 4 & what she endures to keep them fed & safe ❤🥰❤

This beautiful little curious cub in his 2nd year seemed to be checking me out just as much as I was checking him out. There’s something pretty magical about locking eyes with a wild animal and wondering what’s going through their mind if anything, lol

After being back to Haines twice in the search for bears with no luck on the last morning nature had other plans!! Woke up & right out front of our RV where we had Boondock was a Mama & 4 cubs waist high in a meadow full of grass!!

We were able to pulled up our chairs and watched as this beautiful family wandered through the waist-deep grass, feeding, playing, and occasionally standing tall to check their surroundings. No one else anywhere but us & the bears who allowed us the privilege of being a part of their world. It was one of those moments where you forget to speak and just soak it all in.

At one point though two large dogs came running out of nowhere into the field, barking at the bears. Mama immediately wheeled around and started toward them, making it very clear who was in charge. She stopped before getting too close, returned to her cubs, and the dogs wisely kept their distance, barking from afar until she calmly led her little family away.

Sometimes the best wildlife encounters aren’t found after miles of searching… they’re waiting just outside your front door.

The rain has kept us reaching for our jackets & us wondering if it was ever going to stop but finally the sky has stopped crying & we have sunshine!! 🌞

But with all that rain, the valleys & mountains are so saturated with color & the waterfalls have gone from pretty to show-offs!! Everywhere we look feels like a postcard.

It’s hard to describe the feeling of standing in the middle of it all with Stan, surrounded by mountains, rushing water, and landscapes that seem almost too beautiful to be real.

Alaska, you continue to amaze us every single day!!!

Every year I challenge myself by entering a select few international photography competitions. Not because I expect to win, but because they encourage me to look at my own work with a more critical eye and continue growing as a photographer.

One of those is the IIC International Imaging Competition, attracting exceptional photographers from more than 50 countries. The standard of imagery is extraordinary, and it is always an honor to have my work judged alongside so many talented artists from around the world.

Spent a couple of amazing days in Whitehorse photographing eagles🦅 It was so exciting to be in an area where eagles seemed to be everywhere. Every turn offered another opportunity to watch and photograph these magnificent birds.
The not so fun part though is sorting through hundreds (okay... probably thousands!) of photos.

I'm really hoping one of the birds I photographed turns out to be a Juvenile Golden or even adult Golden Eagle although I don't think I saw an Adult one. If not, there were certainly plenty of juvenile Bald Eagles which suggests it has been a great year for them!!

I'm going to start with this magnificent eagle which I'm hoping my more educated bird photographers can tell me if this is a Golden Eagle, if it is I will be soooooooo excited as it would be my first. 🤞🤞🤞

I was not prepared for his huge wingspan & the fact he came so close to me so unfortunately I clipped his wings in some images but still love them!!

Very behind in posting, just too much excitement, but will try to catch up....
An early morning start at Laird Hot Springs 2 days ago was the perfect way to begin another incredible day on this northern adventure. The hot springs themselves were absolutely magical, surrounded by the quiet beauty of the wilderness.
But the journey from Laird Hot Springs to Watson Lake brought an even more exciting surprise… our first bears of the trip! 🐻
We were fortunate enough to spend some time watching and photographing 6 beautiful bears along the way.
A stop at Smith River Falls brought another moment in nature....
but I had forgotten my camera raincoat back in the RV & it started to rain but thankfully my little camera umbrella which I always keep in the jeep came to the rescue,🤣, it may not have been the fanciest setup, but it did the trick and kept the camera protected while I captured the waterfall!!
Weather comes & goes with rain & sun but still enjoying every minute.
Hope everyone is staying safe from all the tornadoes we have been hearing about!!!

The Bluebirds bring calm & fly around minding their own business but the Swallows often bring a little chaos with trying to take over the same nesting houses. They finally settled on a house further down but watching their antics as they seemed to be conducting a very loud emergency housing meeting & not agreeing whether to just peacefully move on or stay & fight, Lol
