White fawn lilies carpeting the forest floor at Swan Lake. These native beauties bloom for just a few weeks each spring and are one of the first wildflowers to feed early pollinators. ✿

Earlier this week at Esquimalt Lagoon.

I was watching the mergansers when this harbour seal surfaced nearby, briefly looking around before slipping back under and resurfacing somewhere else. 🦭

2025 was a year for the birds, the whales, and the island. A lot of firsts. A lot of change. A lot of rediscovery. Grateful for all of it. ♡

This morning we went to see the sunrise at Esquimalt Lagoon and spent some time birding. There were birds everywhere, but the northern pintails held my attention the longest. They were hanging with the mallards and the males were calling and doing interesting display behaviours, clearly trying to impress the females. I didn’t photograph that part.. I was too caught up watching it happen in real time. But I did photograph this beautiful pintail. As the sun lifted over the cloudy horizon, the light softened and reflected off the water, making the details of this bird really stand out. ♡
