Beacon Hill Park offers an abundance of flowers, both in cultivated beds and growing wild. One of my favourites is the Calla Lily. I took this photo at the central gardens in the park.

There is an old (completed in 1889) stone bridge over Goodacre Lake in Beacon Hill Park. In the winter, the stones in the bridge collect the sun’s warmth and freely share it with anyone who visits, surrounded by an extraordinary diversity of plants and wildlife!

Fountain Lake in Beacon Hill Park is a wonderful place to enjoy wildlife. Great Blue Herons go there to eat and one day this heron tucked itself inside the shadow of a busy, radiating plant at the edge of the water as a way of cloaking itself while hunting fish. Then, once it had its fill, it emerged out into the sun without making a ripple . . . to warm itself . . . to show the brilliance and beauty of silent stillness in living form.

I love the small (~30cm/12” high), delicate plants with yellow flowers that blossom forth in spring along the creek banks in Beacon Hill Park. Commonly known as wood poppies (Stylophorum diphyllum), they are becoming increasingly rare in Canada; so much so that in April 1993, they were designated “Endangered.” Look carefully for them between Fountain Lake and Goodacre Lake in the Park. They are not an easy plant to spot, except for the few days when they are flowering.

The next time you’re in Beacon Hill Park, sit quietly for a while near some of the red and yellow Columbine flowers planted there and you will soon be visited by one of the resident hummingbirds . . .
