Your “First Take” Specialists
Aerial Vista Productions has been involved in a multitude of aerial video and photographic projects. Communication is always key, and we start by getting a clear sense of what our customers want to ensure you get the most from our aerial vantage. With this info we can add our creative sugg

estions to create the optimal shot for any lighting conditions. Currently we are getting outstanding result with our Canon 5d Mk3 with a 24-105 Image stabilized lens. We are able to handle any DSLR that you may want to use and can mount cameras as big as the Red Dragon, Red Epic and Red Scarlet. We can also fly the Sony FS700 and Canon C100. We also have 2 DJI inspires that shoot 4K video and RAW photos for shoots that require difficult to get to locations or quick changes of locations

Where do you work out of? We are a Victoria based company but we love to travel and our work often takes us up and down Vancouver Island, the Gulf Island and on to the Mainland. We are willing to travel anywhere in British Columbia including Vancouver, Squamish, Whistler, Kamloops, Prince George and Revelstoke. We are also available for specialized work out of province and internationally. Remote equipment can fly up to 400 ft by Transport Canada Regulations. For most operations there is no need to fly over 200 ft. Our equipment is flown by line of sight so elevation is limited largely based on visibility. What about bad weather? Weather is a factor, we don’t like to shoot photos or video during heavy or light precipitation. Light conditions are usually a factor, with bright sunshine being great for wide open shots, but overcast skies making for better exposure within forest or areas of shadow. We generally do not fly in winds over 20 km/h. What is the maximum wind speed in which you can fly? For the best video and performance, winds under 20km/h are ideal. How many crew members are required for operation? A crew of 2 is needed for all operations as required by Transport Canada; Pilot and Spotter. What emissions or pollutants are emitted during flight? Zero emissions and no pollution. Our copters are electric and environmentally friendly. We use rechargeable batteries with electric motors so there is a very minimal carbon footprint. How close can you fly to buildings, vehicles, and people? Transport Canada requires us to stay 30 meters away from any building, vehicle, or person(s) not associated with the approved Flight Certification. Those who are briefed on the operation and specifically involved with it can be within the 30 meter radius. Do you have insurance? Yes, to comply with the mandatory regulation set by Transport Canada and to protect all of our clients we do carry commercial liability insurance that covers our operations. What is the payload of your copters? We can lift up to 12 lbs of camera equipment including but not limited to the RED Epic & Dragon, Canon 7d, Canon 5d and the Sony FS 100 & FS 700. Can you fly at night? At this time Transport Canada does not permit night flying. Please inquire if your production requires night footage and we can submit a further inquiry to Transport Canada specific for your needs in the event an exception can be made. Is it safe to fly on top of actors/crowd? Safety comes first. We never fly on top of audience or crowd who are not well briefed and trained for emergency procedures. Is it safe in general? We have strict safety procedures and checklists to ensure maximum safety on set, but in wrong hands or environment large RC heli can be very dangerous. And there is always a small change for mechanical or electric failure. Thats why we fly only in a controlled situation. If we feel its unsafe to fly, then we don´t. Can you fly inside? Yes we can fly a large enough space such as Atrium, Gymnasium,. Hall, or Theatre. What is the maximum speed? About 60km/h. What is the maximum operating distance for the Octocopter? Pilot has to be able to see the orientation of the Heli, so there has to be always uninterrupted line of sight between pilot and Heli. The maximum radius then being about 300m from the pilot. The Octo can be also piloted from a moving vehicle to extend its range. Can we use our own camera on your heli? We can fly with most small sized cameras, it just takes bit preparation. What is the largest camera you can fly with? Currently the Canon Red Epic, Red Dragon, Sony Fs 700 and Canon 1dC are the heaviest cameras we can fly. Can you control the camera from the ground? Yes, we can remote control tilt (150 of tilt), pan (360 degrees of unlimited movement) and roll. Can you see what you are shooting? Yes, there is a wireless video feed coming from the heli so that my camera operator and DOP or director can watch. Can the wireless video from the heli used for live broadcast? No, the power of the video transmitter used on the heli is limited. The final video is stored on the memory card of the camera on heli and the final quality of the image can be checked when helicopter returns to ground. What safety considerations are there? Our team is adamant about safety and takes all concerns very seriously for every operation. If we feel it is unsafe to proceed with an operation it will be rescheduled or relocated. With a range of experience flying remote equipment, we can visualize the potential of what can go wrong and so we always ensure to take extensive precautions. Prior to all operations, those involved will be briefed on topics including but not limited to:

Flight patterns
Take off and landing procedures
Maintaining safety zones
We require safety meetings with cast and crew prior to flight. Topics include but are not limited to:

Crowd safety (preventing those who are not associated with the project from interfering)
Stunt person/talent safety
Safety for alternate camera and support personnel

Our IMAX crew during filming of the Grizzly sequences!

Great Bear Rainforest trip Give away below :)

From Ian McAllister:
The film crew and the Kitasoo/Xai'Xais First Nation grizzly bear researchers take a moment after a super fun and productive couple of days shooting the grizzly bear sequence.

This was the magical day that a grizzly bear wandered into the middle of our rub tree/mark trail setup and of course, no one needed to be told to keep rolling the cameras. So stoked to see this on the giant screen soon and also to see young Mercedes, pictured in the middle here, light up the screen with her infectious smile and in-depth knowledge of her culture and territory.

The Kitasoo/Xai'Xais Spirit Bear Lodge has generously donated a 5-day trip for two to their territory in the Great Bear Rainforest. Go to www.greatbearrainforestfilm.com to enter for a chance to win a trip of a lifetime through them or through Mothership Adventures, who have donated a 10-day trip aboard their luxury adventure vessel the Columbia III. Thank you both for your generosity.

Canada has gone from 1% marine protection to 7.9% protection in only 4 years. Still short of the 10% by 2020 target pledged as part of the UN Convention of Biodiversity (CBD), a new report by SeaBlue Canada shows that more than half of that 7.9% is protected through Fisheries Act marine refuges. These “refuges” don't restrict shipping, oil and gas activity, or mining. We need stronger protection and equitable governance for sensitive marine areas.

Read the report here: https://seabluecanada.org/2019/01/23/canadas-marine-refuges-need-upgrade/

You can help improve protection in our marine refuges. Write your letter today in support of adopting internationally-accepted minimum standards for Canada’s marine protected areas:

2 years ago I went for a 10 day interview to be the Chief Drone Pilot on an IMAX. Thankfully I survived! This led to 6 different trips in 3 different seasons. We explored and filmed on Ian McAllister's Catamaran from the the north tip of Vancouver Island to Prince Rupert in an area known as the Great Bear Rainforest. In 5 months it will premiere in IMAX screens around the world. This is the first trailer being released to the public, so make sure to click on HD! Such an amazing crew who dedicated nearly 3 years to this including: Deirdre Leowinata and the team at Pacific WildWild, Andy Maser Cheri Herbert Benjamin C Goertzen Haley Rae-Ann and so many others!
