Look what stopped in for a visit today. Have you all put away your hummingbird feeders? There are some stragglers at times coming through long after most have migrated. The last time I seen this little guy was last Thursday Nov 28th just before our cold spell of -12 which he has managed to withstand.
I have been bringing in the feeder every night in order to keep it thawed and sometime even during the day.
Did you know these little guys are tough little birds, during the summer their heart beats approx 1200 beats / minute and in the cold temperatures drops to about 48 beats/ minute in order to conserve energy. They go into what is called torpor which is a state of physical or mental lethargy, decreased physiology activity in animals usually caused by reduced body temperature and metabolic rate enables animals to survive periods of reduced food availability. I will do whatever I can to help this little guy survive his cold days here ..... but I wish he would just migrate and make his way back when his odds are better.
