Can you guess the year of these photos?
Hint 1: No editing or filters.

Hint 2: No AI either
Hint 3: These were taken on film and this family will receive actual film negatives.

And yes, with all the film photography you probably see every day in your feeds, you probably did assume it was 2026 and not 1986 or even 1976.

I have to tell you... when I got this roll back I got total nostalgia for some of the photos my mom has of us when we were that age.

As someone who has mostly photographed families and weddings with digital, it's felt so good to use my analog cameras along with digital over these last few years.

And I'm also happy thinking the first picture is one of my favourite photos I've ever taken. In the past I might have hesitated to give an out of focus image. In this case? I think it's magic.

I will share more from this tender family photo session..but first, here are some from the only roll of I used during our afternoon together (film is now always a complimentary option with each of my portrait and documentary sessions).

For photographers. Kodak Vision 250d is actually a motion picture stock that was adapted for 35mm cameras. Unlike most color negative film, it needs to be developed with motion picture chemicals so I sent it to the only lab I could find in Canada that offers the service ( in Alberta ). They also sell this film under their own brand labeled: “Cinefilm 250D”.

In Victoria, we’re pretty fortunate to have several stores that still sell film, including Kerrisdale, London Drugs, and… best of all… .
Located in Market Square,  has a fridge loaded with so many unique films (including this one) it would make your head spin... I highly recommend stopping in for a visit. The entire shop feels like a living museum, but one where you can go home with the items!

Want to pass on nostalgia to your family with film photography? DM me to chat!

20 years ago I photographed my first wedding. It was 2006 and I was getting ready to graduate from the Western Academy of Photography in Victoria. I remember being a nervous wreck. I had several film cameras, and a Nikon D70 digital with only a few lenses, one of them being a 10mm ... and if memory serves a single flash to my mame. Lightroom wouldn't come out for at least another year (which is a great tool for editing RAW files) and I shot .jpg to make it easier to edit. And speaking of editing, I was much slower then so didn't do a lot of extra polishing. Blows my mind to think of how much has changed in my wedding photography work.

Fortunately, Helen and Rod were an easy going couple and had seen some of my nature and travel fisheye photos online, so they asked for some extra creative stuff.

Speakingbof history...This is the breakwater before the guard rails were installed. It created the perfect lines for a fisheye shot and I used this image as a keystone in my portfolio for probably another two or three years after.

When I teach wedding and creative photography workshops I always point out that people should look for triangles in their composition... the rule of thirds and golden mean are about 3s and so are triangles... I think this photo speaks to that rule.

It's been a wild and fun 20 years and I hope I get to continue to do this for many more!
