My mama 💛 One of the best people I know. My kids beloved Oma & favourite adventure buddy. My always ready to receive me with wide open arms retreat when things get hard (or every three days, whichever comes first...). She turned 54 two days ago and was given the news that doctors found masses on her colon, lymph nodes, and liver. My joy filled, energetic, tree climbing young mom has aggressive colon cancer. Devastating news to hear any time. Cruel to find out during the holiday season. Crueler still to find out on your birthday. My mom is a fighter and her spirit is not broken over this. I know she looks at this as a reminder to live and love every day as if it’s your last, and so I will try too. I will try to see the little beauties and kindnesses throughout the day. Reminders that this overwhelming pain in my heart and worry for the future is not all there is right now. But still - . You have no place in my family. .

We are in a season of raging three and five year old temper tantrums (because “Elmo” doesn’t start with an “L” but it should, we still have to use the potty before nap time, and as much as they want it to, the very act of checking the “weathercast” doesn’t actually make the weather change, etc) mixed in with sweet declarations of “I love you mama” or “my heart feels like love to you mama” or “sometimes my heart is mad and I don’t like you! But I still do”. Most days are exhausting and some days I feel stretched in all directions but then at the end of the day, I am still scrolling through photos of my babies and thinking of all the ways I could handle things differently for a smoother tomorrow. Life with small kids. Right?

I don't think I ever tire of watching the kids colour and hearing about the intricate things they have drawn (I ask them to tell me about them because at this stage it all looks very...abstract). Also because colouring means they aren't packing all their toys into bags and dumping them in piles in other rooms to have a picnic. A picnic in which there are never enough toys in the pile or bags to put them in to. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I love that she has to insist she isn't "tired for a nap" before she falls asleep not five minutes later. And that she pretends to be sleeping when I come to get her so she can say "mom, you waked me up! I so sleepy"
