Sometimes I still can’t believe this is my job.

Being invited into such an intimate, life-changing moment is something I never take for granted. The room is rarely perfect. Birth is messy, emotional, unpredictable, powerful—and that’s exactly why I love documenting it. I get to capture the strength, vulnerability and beauty of one of life’s most transformative moments.

Years from now, the details might fade. But the way your partner looked at you, the first time you held your baby, the strength you didn’t even know you had—those are the moments worth remembering.

And getting to preserve them? That’s the best part.✨

I realized I haven’t properly introduced myself around here in quite some time, so -

Hi! I’m Alana, the person behind the camera.

I’ve always loved photographing families, but after having my own two daughters, family photos hit a little differently. I take way too many pictures of them, and love capturing their personalities and how they grow.
These days, I know just how quickly everything changes, and how much the everyday moments end up meaning. I want to celebrate each stage of family life.

I live on a bit of land in Vernon with my husband, our two girls, two dogs, a cat, and a whole bunch of fish.
Life is usually a little chaotic, a little messy, and pretty wonderful.

When I’m not taking photos, I’m probably putzing in my yard, out hiking with the family, drinking coffee that’s gone cold, stopping to pick up a cool rock or, commenting on how pretty the light is!

As for photography, I’m not really interested in perfect.

I don’t expect your kids to sit still, smile on command, or behave like tiny adults - mine certainly don’t. Honestly, I’d rather they run around, explore, cuddle up with you when they need to, and just be themselves.

The photos I love most are the ones that feel real—the belly laughs, the messy hair, the hand-holding, the way your toddler insists on being carried for half the session. The little things that make your family yours.

Photography, to me, is a super personal thing.
I’m being invited into your personal space, right?
Your precious family bubble.
It’s sacred territory, and that’s never lost on me.
Which is why I make it my personal mission to get to know you enough, so that I can truthfully capture the real beauty that exists within every family - the stuff that sits below the surface of a forced smile.
Yes, I take my job seriously.
But.
We (you & I) need to be a good ‘fit’ for that to happen.
You’ll be seeking soulful, dreamy, nostalgic images of you & your loved up fam.
And I’ll say ‘YES! Pick me!’ 🙋🏻‍♀️
As fluffy as it may sound to some, it’s my art, and my vision of your utter amazingness that you will receive if you choose me.
I don’t want to bend or contort the way that I interpret this piece of your story.
I don’t want to recreate someone else’s Pinterest board.
What I will do? Is simply capture the out of this world, jaw dropping-ness of what’s already there...that’s all I need.

How To Confidently Book In Your Photo Session, And Love Yourself For Doing It: Part 1.

Does this sound familiar?
“But, I don’t really know how to pose/I don’t know what to do with my hands/I don’t know how to smile naturally”
Oh folks, I love it when I hear this. And I hear it a lot!
But then, I get to put on my most soothing voice, pat you on the back and say:
“It’s ok possum, because guess what? 
You don’t need to pose!”
PLUS, I’m also not going to leave you in a field, and say “Okaaaay...act natural!”
Will there be guidance and direction? Yes.
The occasional bit of (kind) bossiness even? Sure.
Lots of candid ‘hair blowin’ in the wind’ kinda shots too? Abso.flippin.lutely.

When you’re in the thick of the younger years of parenting {y’know when everything is new, and then you figure that out, and then that changes, and then it’s all new again...and so on, and so forth 😂},
it can be challenging sometimes to just be.

To take it all in, to sniff their heads, to write down the cute things they say, to ponder how awesome and life changing and incredible this gig is 🤷🏼‍♀️. Because?

It can feel like an absolute whirlwind. Then they get a little older, and you actually do get more time to ponder.

And you think...’Did I sniff their heads enough? It’s going so fast, and I haven’t done x,y,z, I haven’t TAKEN IT ALL IN enough like I’m supposed to!!’. Yelp. 🤦🏻‍♀️
If that’s you - give yourself a break, mama.

Seriously! It’s a crazy roller coaster this parenting gig - the intense ups and downs and absolutely everything in between.

And if you’re guilting yourself for not being a mystical-unicorn-perfect-mothering-goddess version of yourself that’s not cool 🙈

Because, despite the number of books in the Parenting section at Chapters - there isn’t actually a rule book 😉

And you’re doing an ahhh-mazing job. Yes, YOU 👊🏻💃🏼

The thing about pictures is...

It’s not actually about the photos themselves.

And it’s not actually only about preserving precious moments, memories in time.

The photos are purely a vehicle, to take you somewhere else.

Somewhere important. The place where you can see where you belong.

The place where you can see who you love, and who fiercely loves you in return. The place where you can see the beauty that everyone else sees. The place where you can see you matter. So.freakin.much. The place where you’ve given yourself permission to be seen.

Pretty powerful for just a mass of beautiful pixels, hey?

You can never go back to points on your timeline...

All the little pieces, the fragments, the moments, the minutiae, that come, and then go,

only to be replaced by new little pieces, that come and then go.

And all of those little pieces, they make up your days, and those days, of course, make up your life.

You can never go back to those points on your timeline.

But there is a way that you can re-live them.

There is a way that you can fold them up carefully, and then bring them out when you need to breathe a bit deeper.

There is a way you can transfer them to paper, put them in a frame, and allow them to anchor your grateful heart. And that’s close enough 🩷
