NEXT WEEK - FINAL SPOTS AVAILABLE.

An opportunity to spend two full days studying directly with New York street photographer, filmmaker, and Guggenheim Fellow Richard Sandler.

Over two days, Richard will take us through his life and work, the photographers and photographs that influenced him, and the experiences that shaped the way he learned to see the street. Participants will have the rare opportunity to study Richard’s original prints and slides in person, hear the stories behind the photographs, and learn directly from Richard and more than five decades of photography and filmmaking.

Each day begins in the classroom before moving onto the streets of downtown Vancouver during Richard’s preferred time to photograph: rush hour on a Thursday and Friday afternoon.

This is not simply a lecture about street photography. It is an opportunity to photograph alongside Richard, observe how he works, and receive personal mentorship while navigating the unpredictability of the street.

The workshop also includes a photographic assignment, a professional group critique led by Richard, and one photograph from your work during the workshop professionally printed and custom framed by Legere Fine Art Services.

The third part of The Creative Photographer has begun.

The Geometry of Seeing

Last night we began our study of Henri Cartier-Bresson. His photographic history, his philosophy, and the remarkable visual intelligence behind his photographs.

We looked closely at composition and geometry, anticipation and instinct, and at the way Cartier-Bresson could bring structure to the unpredictability of everyday life.

There is a great deal we can learn from studying the photographers who came before us. Their photographs teach us not only about photography, but about different ways of seeing the world.

Henri Cartier-Bresson spent a lifetime studying the relationship between observation, anticipation, geometry, and the fraction of a second when everything inside the frame comes together.

Beginning on Monday, The Geometry of Seeing is a two-week photography workshop exploring his work, philosophy, influences, and the photographic world in which he worked, then taking those ideas into the streets of Vancouver through guided assignments, critique, editing, and final print selections.

Each participant will finish the workshop with one photograph professionally printed, archival mounted, custom matted, and framed as a finished piece of fine art photography valued at $400.

Beginning August 10, The Geometry of Seeing is a two-week fine art photography workshop exploring Henri Cartier-Bresson’s philosophy of the decisive moment and what his way of seeing can teach us about our own photography.

We’ll begin by looking closely at his photographs and ideas, then take those ideas into the streets of Vancouver through two guided photographic assignments. We’ll photograph, come back together to critique the work, refine our approach, and ultimately select one photograph to take through the complete fine art process.

Your final photograph will be professionally printed, archival mounted, custom matted, and framed in a 16 × 20 inch museum-quality frame, becoming a finished photographic artwork of your own.

We will study how Henri Cartier-Bresson photographed: how he observed the world, anticipated movement, understood geometry, and recognized the moment when everything came together. The goal is not simply to recreate his photographs, but to understand the thinking behind them and use those ideas to deepen our own way of seeing.

Henri Cartier-Bresson believed that a photograph is not found by luck. It is anticipated. It begins long before the shutter is released, in the quiet practice of observation, patience, and an awareness of the world around us.

Over two weeks we’ll explore his philosophy, study his photographs, and spend our time on the streets putting those ideas into practice. My hope is not simply that you’ll make stronger photographs, but that you’ll leave seeing differently.

Only a couple of spots remaining.

I'm honoured to be hosting an intimate two day workshop with New York street photographe Richard Sandler on August 20 & 21.

For more than five decades, Richard has created one of the defining bodies of work in American street photography. His photographs are held in the collections of major museums across the United States, and he is the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, and a New York State Council on the Arts Fellowship.

This will be a rare opportunity to spend two days exploring Richard's philosophy, approach, and working methods through classroom discussions, photography on the streets of Vancouver, and a follow-up group critique.

Enrollment is limited.

This Sunday at 7:00am is the first edition of **The Photographic Assignment**, a new experience built from the ideas we’ve been exploring in my photography workshops.

Rather than wandering with a camera hoping to find photographs, you’ll receive your own individual photographic assignment. A simple point of direction designed to change the way you look, observe, and photograph.

Keep it a secret, or don’t. If someone asks what you’re doing, simply tell them you’re working on a photographic assignment. You might be surprised where the conversation leads.

The assignment is never mandatory. Think of it as an invitation rather than a set of rules. Sometimes the smallest change in direction reveals something entirely unexpected about the way you see.

Assignments are available in four levels:
• Easy
• Moderate
• Advanced
• Journalist

We’ll begin with a short introduction before exploring Vancouver’s Chinatown in the quiet hours of the morning, photographing independently and regrouping along the way to discuss light, shadow, observation, and the photographs we’re beginning to discover.

The forecast calls for a little rain, and honestly, that’s part of the fun. Reflections, atmosphere, umbrellas, and unpredictable moments often make for the strongest street photographs.

A few spots remain.
