Photo by / “There’s nothing quite so complicated as simplicity,” — Charles PooreIn my photography, I always aim for simplicity. That way, I can capture the essence of a place and my subject’s character.Watching the backside of a penguin walking away always makes me smile. They are agile and fast in the water, but so goofy on land.

🎥 Video by / A mother grizzly emerges from the river with a fish—instantly shifting the energy of the entire shoreline. In seconds, the calm turns into a flurry of activity as her three cubs rush in, each trying to claim a share of the prize 🐟🐻What follows is a delicate balance of instinct and learning. The mother holds her ground, allowing the chaos to unfold while maintaining control of the situation. The cubs jostle, wrestle, and vocalize—classic sibling competition—each testing strength, timing, and persistence. It may look like pure conflict, but it’s also a crucial classroom moment in survival skills.Competition between siblings today is preparation for independence tomorrow.Nature rarely teaches softly—but it always teaches well.

Photo by / The ivory gull is a small, beautiful, all-white gull, and is one of the most sought-after Arctic species by birders around the world.Ivory gulls spend most of their lives along the edges of constantly shifting pack ice and in winter near large areas of open water surrounded by sea ice, or polynyas. They are opportunistic scavengers, and for this reason, they often follow polar bears and groups of seals. It is rare to see an ivory gull, let alone a big flock of them, so I was in disbelief when this past September, while cruising along a large glacier on the eastern coast of Spitsbergen, we came across a flock of hundreds of them. There were so many that it took me a while to figure out how to photograph them. We spent a good three hours cruising among the icebergs in front of the glacier, watching their behaviour and taking advantage of some great photographic opportunities.

📸 Photo by / The red panda may share a name with the giant panda… but that’s where the similarity ends. 🐾❤️This enchanting little forest acrobat belongs to its very own family: Ailuridae — and it’s the only living member.Despite the bear-like face and bamboo-loving habits, red pandas are not bears at all. Their closest relatives are found within the musteloid group — think raccoons, otters, and weasels. Evolution took a unique path here, creating a species so distinct it stands beautifully on its own branch of the tree of life. 🌿✨A reminder that nature doesn’t fit neatly into our categories — and that uniqueness is worth protecting.

🎥 Video by / Anthropomorphizing animal behavior is generally considered scientifically inappropriate. However, after spending an hour with this adult grizzly bear, I have little doubt it was simply enjoying itself—playing with a stick, like a dog would do, while soaking in the estuary. 🌧️🧸🌊

📸 Photo by / The little auk is one of the most abundant marine bird species in the North Atlantic, forming vast breeding colonies across Svalbard 🐦❄️These seasonal visitors arrive in late winter to early spring and depart by mid-summer, nesting in dense colonies on steep scree slopes made of loose rock. They tuck themselves deep into crevices for protection, creating highly complex, layered scenes.Photographing little auks is a real challenge due to their density and chaotic backgrounds—but when snow enters the frame, it helps simplify the composition and brings clarity to the subject within the noise. 🤍

Photo by /Svalbard marks the northernmost limit of the harbour seal's range, with an estimated population of just around 1,000 individuals. These highly social animals tend to gather in small groups on rocky outcrops, beaches, or intertidal zones. Their large, beautiful eyes aren’t just photogenic — they also help enhance underwater vision, especially when hunting in dark, murky waters.

📸 Photo by / The Inca Tern is probably the only bird with such long “mustaches,” which serve primarily as an ornamental and sexual trait rather than a functional one. ✨🦜Both males and females have these facial feathers, but in males they are longer, fuller, and brighter. Studies show that females are more attracted to males with prominent mustaches, as they signal good health and genetic quality. During courtship, males often flare or position their mustaches prominently to impress potential mates. 💛

🎥 Video by / In spring, after emerging from a months-long fasting period, bears begin rebuilding energy reserves with what the landscape first offers: fresh grasses and sedges 🌿🐻Sedges are grass-like plants that thrive in wet areas and are surprisingly nutrient-rich, providing early-season protein when other food sources are still scarce. As summer progresses, diets shift toward berries, roots, and mushrooms, followed by the salmon run—a critical feeding period when bears rapidly gain weight and accumulate the fat needed for winter hibernation. 🐟🍂Watching bears chew sedges and make their unmistakable “expressions,” I couldn’t help but wonder about the taste… so I tried one. Strong and fibrous, but surprisingly pleasant—just definitely more work to chew than it looks! 😄
