A new day rises behind an old monument to another age.
Above Brașov, the enormous orange-red sun slowly emerges through the clouds, divided for a moment by a reinforced-concrete industrial tower left behind from Romania’s communist era.
The tower was built by people, for an economy, an ideology and a time that once seemed permanent.
The sunrise belongs to none of them.
Governments change. Industries rise and disappear. Buildings age. Generations come and go. Yet morning continues to arrive, indifferent to the monuments we leave behind.
And perhaps there is something deeply human in that contrast.
We spend so much of our lives believing that happiness depends upon changing what surrounds us: a different place, a different circumstance, a different past.
Lincoln’s words suggest something more difficult—and perhaps more powerful.
Happiness can also begin with the decision of where we place our attention.
In this scene, one person might see an aging concrete tower and the remnants of an industrial past.
Another might see the extraordinary red light surrounding it.
Neither the tower nor the sunrise has changed.
Only the way we choose to see them.
The clouds cannot prevent the dawn.
The concrete cannot imprison the light.
And the past cannot stop another morning from beginning.
Perhaps happiness is not the absence of shadows on our horizon.
Perhaps it is remembering to look for the light between them.
