Jonathan Desmond Photography

Jonathan Desmond Photography I'm a Documentary Wedding and Family Photographer and I create genuine photo stories through an hone That is, a photograph.

My Goal and My Passion: "Creating genuine photographic stories through an honest documentary approach." I started photography in 2007 with a trip to Sydney and Singapore. I remember using the camera to photograph all the sights and amazing culture and architecture as well as the people (and even animals!) of those places. I came back hooked on the idea that I was creating something amazing: a docu

mentation of where I had been and what I experienced in that moment in time. I started Jonathan Desmond Photography in 2012 and have been photographing in a documentary style since. The photography style came to light as I photographed my own relatives and I realized how important it was to have these kind of photographs. I feel that the capturing of various moments in our lives in a documentary fashion is a creation of something amazing: an honest re-telling of our stories to those who will look back on the photographs. I have photographed as both a primary photographer and as a secondary photographer in several weddings. I have been continually documenting Vancouver’s Chinatown and (at time of writing) am putting together books on a recent trip to Japan and also a more recent trip to Banff, Alberta and Jasper, Alberta. You can also find me in the streets of Vancouver Downtown taking images of the life around me. I’m a Vancouver-based, Canadian-born, Chinese-Canadian, jazz-loving photographer who really derives a passion from photographing those special documentary moments that happen during our lives. I have a major in Economics (much like my photographer hero: Sebastio Salgado) and have a subconscious life as a musician (RCM Piano level 10, if you’re curious… and right now, I’m trying to learn the ocarina).

So, I don’t often do surprise proposals let alone share them here on Instagram but I wanted to show a side of my work that I don’t often showcase. While for most of a wedding day (or any event I do) I’m creating artistic and timeless candids photographs and bringing out my inner-ninja, there are a few moments where I do pose my couples. This is usually short and not the focus of the day, but I like to include it and will occasionally pose folks to create an amazing set of photographs that tells a story. More on that next time. For now, enjoy this set of images I created for D&L, both candid and also posed.

Practicing my art medium(s) is something that still continues to bring me joy. It’s like hiking the trail that you’ve hiked hundreds of times before but enjoy it nonetheless. It’s familiar territory that brings a certain soothing to your soul. Street photography and finding the beautiful in the everyday is part of the foundation of my documentary wedding photography.

The FIFA World Cup of 2025 transformed the city of Vancouver into this vibrant cityscape teeming with international fans and visitors and also brought together Canadians in a way we had not seen since the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. I documented a chunk of this on my film Leica camera using Leica Monopan50 film to get these results. I’m going to miss it when the World Cup is over.

A few of my last shots of the FIFA vibes in Vancouver (although the film roll I shot will be featured soon!). From the Bell silver ball, Mexican chihuahuas and buying a ton of cool 3d printed souvenirs off of .art_ , the Vancouver festivities have been a blast to document and experience.

A photo collection from my exploring of the FIFA Vancouver festivities at noon at Granville Street (mostly). Love the vibe and just meeting new people. It’s really cool to be able to capture it all.

SHARE so people can see the awesome cherry blossoms of Vancouver! Mwa hahaha!! It’s been raining really hard this past week or so but I managed to find time to still capture some cherry blossoms on a somewhat dreary and grey day. Blessed to have these blossoms in the amazing city of Vancouver!! 🌸

Take a little break from all the doomscrolling and just breathe and enjoy the cherry blossoms.
While I’m still posting somewhat on Instagram, I’ve given up the doomscroll for Lent. Do I miss the memes? Yes. Do I miss the algorithm suddenly showing me shocking and violent car crashes after watching a funny cat video? HECK NO. I enjoy having my brain back though. It lets me create cool stuff like this.
