"Like a joy on the heart of a sorrow,
The sunset hangs on a cloud;
A golden storm of glittering sheaves,
Of fair and frail and fluttering leaves,
The wild wind blows in a cloud.

Hark to a voice that is calling
To my heart in the voice of the wind:
My heart is weary and sad and alone,
For its dreams like the fluttering leaves have gone,
And why should I stay behind?"

"She moves like a ghost
Sleepless eyes and weathered bones
She is glass, and stone, and all things in between
And so it seems
That she floats amongst the falling leaves
She is all the places that I have ever been"

"It's not defined or hidden by petals
nor demarcated by sharp wetted thorns
her eyes hypnotic beauty possesses
the stars like the sky that the sun adorns.
You have the beauty of a wild hedge rose
I want to prick my thumb, feel all loves woes
your heart doesn't require any bedclothes
you have the spirit of a red, red rose.
Don't want to hold you in any way coarse
like the Persian rose, you are the truest-source
but like the hedge rose if taken by force
all four petals frail will-disperse of course
love, taken slowly grows not in deceit,
gowns-they're-for dilettantes in conceit."

"'Oh, that's the Paradise-in-bloom,' I said;
And truly it was fair enough for flowers
had we but in us to assume in march
Such white luxuriance of May for ours.

We stood a moment so in a strange world,
Myself as one his own pretense deceives;
And then I said the truth (and we moved on) .
A young beech clinging to its last year's leaves."

"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."

"Ah Sun-flower! weary of time,
Who countest the steps of the Sun:
Seeking after that sweet golden clime
Where the travellers journey is done.

Where the Youth pined away with desire,
And the pale Virgin shrouded in snow:
Arise from their graves and aspire,
Where my Sun-flower wishes to go."

"Afternoon light, slow and
somnolent
a honeyed sky dust,
slants through windows and open doors.
Outside
it drips down through the leaves
trickling to the ground, thinned and muted.
Fireflies among fading sunbeams,
golden puddles in purpling shadows,
stir, waking —
the unexpected lilting breath
cool air: a taste
of dusk’s sweet call to dance."

"Yet when erelong I turn on Autumn's brink,
To view again this Summer's traversed way,
Its journey then will be
But a brief ecstasy -
Not half so long as this one languorous day."

"Off through the haze that dances in the shine
The warm sun showers in the open glade,
The forest lies, a silhouette design
Dimmed through and through with shade."

"We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
And mouth with myriad subtleties.

Why should the world be over-wise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while
We wear the mask."

"She was a Phantom of delight
When first she gleamed upon my sight;
A lovely Apparition, sent
To be a moment’s ornament;
Her eyes as stars of Twilight fair;
Like Twilight’s, too, her dusky hair;
But all things else about her drawn
From May-time and the cheerful Dawn;
A dancing Shape, an Image gay,
To haunt, to startle, and way-lay."

"Subtle was the breeze and the clouds had the shine,
The horizon had imbibed a shade of crimson 🍷:
The air was pink by the vermilion of the sky
You were the breeze and the sky was your eye,
The shine of the sea, the sands of the shore;
The high risen tide with its throttling core:
The ocean was gravid with stories to tell,
But then you resembled the ocean as well
The night creped along and the fire died down,
Another day closed and I stood alone in the town.
I kept on dreaming and you moved very far
For I am the lone solitude and life you are!"⁣
