There’s nowhere else on earth quite like it 🌊✨

The video quality isn’t where I want it 🙈 but this place is far too mystical and magical not to share a few moments from recent underwater adventures.

Out of this world 🤯

❄️🌊 January 3rd on the Salish Sea

Starting 2026 the best way, out on the water.

The rain faded as we pulled away from the dock, and winter revealed just how alive this place is. Hundreds of Steller sea lions hauled out together, cormorants everywhere — all sharing the same space in a scene that felt quiet, wild, and completely full of life.

Grateful to begin the year here. ❄️✨

Missing the long summer days on the water just a little extra lately. Don’t get me wrong, fall and winter have their cozy charm and I love the slower days they bring. But nothing compares to salty air, sunshine, and sharing the magic of the Salish Sea 🌊✨

Had the incredible luck of seeing T063 “Chainsaw”, one of the most recognizable Bigg’s killer whales in the Salish Sea, this season 🖤

His jagged dorsal fin — the feature that earned him his name — is likely the result of an old injury, possibly from his younger years. Born around 1978, Chainsaw is one of the oldest known male Bigg’s orcas still thriving today. Watching him cut through the water with that unmistakable fin was UNREAL, especially after following his story for sooooo long, it was like meeting a celeb 😂

We watched this humpback whale pec-slapping for at least ten minutes — enormous white fins rising and crashing against the surface again and again 💙

Those fins belong to Megaptera novaeangliae, meaning “big-winged New Englander” — a nod to their incredible pectoral fins that can reach up to a third of their body length (up to 5m or 16 feet!!) 🌊🤯

Scientists think pec-slapping may be communication, display, or play. Judging by the other blows we saw on the horizon, I reckon this was a form of communication. Whatever the reason, it’s pure Salish Sea magic. ✨

One of my absolute favourite marine mammals to spot in the Salish Sea? Sea lions! 🦭

Whether they’re barking on a buoy, leaping through the waves, or jostling for the best lounging spot, they’re always incredible to watch.

✨ Fun fact: Sea lions can hold their breath for up to 15 minutes while diving for fish — and when they’re not hunting, they haul out in big groups called “rafts” to rest and socialize 🌊💙

One of those moments that makes you go “woah…”

Bigg’s killer whales, Stanley and family (T123s) surfacing with Mount Garibaldi towering in the background. Nature has a way of reminding us just how small (and lucky) we really are 🌊🐋🏔️

The Red Moon of August 🔥 A haunting red moon over Vancouver back in August. Beautiful to see but a haunting reminder of the wildfire devastation and the smoke that filled our skies 🌌

One of my absolute favourite things about being out on the water is never knowing what will happen next 🐋💦

This beautiful humpback started chin slapping multiple times — crashing its head onto the surface with a huge splash!

Chin slaps create a thunderous sound that travels far underwater, likely used for communication with other whales. As a photographer, I can tell you it also makes for some unforgettable shots!

Having the privilege to take photos also comes with the responsibility of sharing how we need to protect these animals, their habitat, and all other creatures in it. Protecting whales means protecting the oceans they call home 🌊 Just a few small things you can do to make a huge difference:

1. Reduce plastic use
2. Use eco-friendly products
3. Join shoreline/ocean clean ups
4. See a blow, go slow 🛥️
