The Puffins of the Treshnish Isles.

Yes, I do have close-up shots of the puffins, too (lots of em!) but I find the shots of the puffins in their environment, doing puffin things, so very interesting. And I hope you do too!

1. Spend months researching Scotland and what you want to see and do while you're there. (PUFFINS!)
2. Book your trip.
3. Book your accommodations.
4. Book your rental car.
5. Realize you've left it too late to book your puffin trip to the Isle of May, and all the seats have sold. Stress a bit about that and berate yourself for procrastinating yet again.
6. Research a little further and realize that there's another site to view the puffins and the boat leaves right from the little town you've already booked accoms in!
7. Get online and quickly book that before that fills up too.
8. Rent a long lens to take with you because your bear lens is just TOO big and your other long lens just isn't long enough.
9. Lug your camera gear all over England and Scotland - trains, planes and automobiles.
10. Realize your landscape lens has decided NOPE to this trip and just....stopped working. Stress about that a bit but just be grateful that the long lens is still functional.
11. Realize midway through your trip that your R1 is a battery-eating monster and the three fully charged batteries you brought (with no charger) just ain't gonna cut it. Cut down on your shooting drastically so as to preserve battery life for the puffin trip!
12. Set off the day of the puffin trip with less than 50% charge left on your final battery. Yikes. Livin' on the edge.
13. Arrive in absolute puffin heaven and shoot to your heart's content. Shoot your battery right down to 3%, just as you're set to re-board the boat and head back. Perfect.
14. Arrive back home and start the cull, eagerly anticipating your puffin shots.

The shot:

Seriously though - I've got a lot of puffin shots to work through and I swear they're (much) better than this one, but this one makes me laugh every time I look at it😆
Lotta rookie mistakes on the way, but I always seem to get by. Incoming puffins!

Scotland, The Black and Whites.

As of late, one of my favourite things to do while I'm culling through images from a trip, is to keep an eye out for what I might think make a striking monochrome image. I keep those tucked away in the back of my mind until I've finished "the cull" and then let myself loose on them. These are my favourites from the Scotland trip. I hope you enjoy.

Guess what?
More Scotland photos!
For someone who was having a major lens/camera malfunction whilst traveling, I sure managed to snap off a lot of shots!
I'm not sorry.

Scotland Vignettes.
I keep thinking I'm finished going through these images, but then one catches my eye. Then another. And another.

Ahhh, Scotland.

If I had to narrow my time in Scotland down to ten images or less, this is what that would probably look like. But that would be a nigh on impossible task, and, luckily, I don't have to narrow it down! I have *just a few* more images to spam you with. In the meantime, here are a few of my favourites.

Everyone that travels to Scotland, I've discovered, has a completely different holiday. Sometimes even than the folks they're traveling with! Scotland will capture your heart in ways you didn't expect - like the absolute delight with which I welcomed the very few misty, moody, chilly days we experienced. And the way I relished switching out the ol' flip-flops and shorts to pull on a warm, knit sweater and jeans. I'm told we were lucky to have experienced such mild, sunny days while we were there, but I felt like I was missing a true Scottish experience without the wind and the rain and the chill.

I'm glad we didn't follow the whole "tourist track" that tells you all the "must sees" and "must dos" while you're there (although we made sure to include a few, as you'll note) but instead we let a random photo or sentence we'd seen or read capture our imagination and away we went in that direction (even when it ended up taking us to some puzzlingly expensive, but lovely lodgings) - but the journey alone was worth it - with single track roads for miles and miles through the jaw-droppingly scenic Highlands, and stops along the way to make friends with sheep, and highland coos, and the like (or even a stop at the World Famous Shark Toilet inside the Golden Larches Cafe near Strathyre!)

Anyways. Here's a few to start you off with and I hope you'll enjoy the journey with me! Pour yourself a cuppa and find yourself some shortbread biscuits, and enjoy!

Just a few more snaps from Southsea, England.

A day spent browsing and petting local cats as we slogged our way through the jet lag (which, incidentally, was the worst I've ever had! No jet lag on the return home this time though, so I suppose that sort of makes up for it)

I've been away for a minute!

I've just returned from a trip to England & Scotland. During a heat wave, no less! All the jeans, sweaters and flatcaps I'd packed (and was looking forward to wearing) for UK weather didn't see the light of day over there. I even returned with a suntan. Whatttt. The downside to all of this warm weather was the forest fires that were burning in beautiful Scotland when we left. Heartbreaking to see what Europe's dealing with right now - something we're all too familiar with here in BC, unfortunately. My heart remains with the beautiful people of Scotland, and the beautiful forests of the Cairngorms, and the wildlife that call them home. ❤️‍🩹

I will share some photos from my travels over the next couple of days with you (spoiler alert: THERE WILL BE PUFFINS), and I thought I'd start with a few snaps from lovely Southsea, England, where we spent a few days visiting with family and attending a gorgeous English wedding. Those Brits really know how to get married in style!

Anyhoo - here are a few things that caught my eye in my wanderings there. Unfortunately I was having camera/lens issues upon arrival and didn't get any shots while I was in London, although the good folks at Jessops on Oxford Street were very helpful with some troubleshooting for me! Thank goodness my long lens was problem free for the puffins later in the trip!
