A grizzly emerges from a sea of sedge. This titan was unfazed by our presence. After sharing a brief moment of eye contact he returned to grazing the protein rich Lyngbye’s sedge.

He was one of the more stoic of all the bears we encountered. With dark cheeks, a light visible marking down the center of his face and covered with open wounds and battle scars.

My trip to the Khutzeymateen was a bucket list adventure that I won’t soon forget. But earlier this spring, during one of my busiest times of year, feeling burnt out and disconnected from nature, I received a message from my neighbour: “we have a hummingbird in our front tree, that has built a little nest. She’s sitting in there now.”

This is the Anna’s hummingbird mama that built her nest less than a 20 second walk from my front door.

Don’t under estimate the importance of connecting with your neighbours and taking time to explore spaces close to home.
This was a little neighbourly gesture that had a large impact. Thanks to my amazing neighbours for sharing this moment.
