Winter Workshops in Calgary and Edmonton coming up in late January / early February 2025. Only a handful of seats remain. If you enjoy scenes like this, and would like photographing them with guidance from my co-instructor Olivier Du Tré Photography and myself, then have a look at more details by visiting the workshop link below. The info is for the Calgary Workshop - I'll post the link for Edmonton in the comments below. Thank you and have a great Sunday everyone!

A wave of trees. Photographed *today* as I’m traveling through Sweden towards Lapland. Had an amazing first day with incredible conditions. Not much post was required for this photograph - I think it’s the first time I get to share work created on the same day 😊 I have a few more days to explore on my own before my Lofoten workshop begins on the weekend.

Standing strong. Taken while roaming the beautiful snowy prairies of Saskatchewan, scouting for the fine-art workshop I just completed. I look forward to traveling these areas each year 😊

Outlier. Photographed 10 days ago while driving through the incredible Rocky Mountains of Banff and Kananaskis. Fresh snow the previous day made for excellent conditions...this scene was right next to the road, with traffic light enough to allow me to pull over. Far from the many iconic locations of the area, I feel very happy to have found this little gem. Photographed with my digital back.

4 quick edits from my workshop week in Saskatchewan, Canada. It was a true winter wonderland, with temperatures around the freezing mark (instead of -30 last year). So we were able to stay outside photographing much longer and more comfortably. My co-instructor Olivier Du Tré and I are very proud of the work our students did! Always a pleasure and an inspiration working with him and seeing amazing photographs being created by our workshop participants, some of which have been back 3 or more times to our workshop. As usual, we did not go to any iconic locations. Instead this workshop is about seeing, even the smallest details, and making your own photographs (instead of re-creating what others have done before). Working on new workshops which will be posted soon, so please watch for that. For now, I’m excited to leave for Norway soon for my annual winter workshop 😊

4 more quick edits. Yesterday’s weather was much ‘nicer’, which surely made it safer to travel, but a lot more challenging photographically! I just love being outside with my camera when most people wouldn’t leave the house. Whatever the weather, it’s a privilege to spend the day photographing so I took it as a challenge. Didn’t have a formal plan nor destination, so just headed down the road...got lucky and found some cool stuff! Am I the only photographer who gets excited about snow tracks on the ground? This was in a parking area right next to the ring road...I spend over an hour there. Then saw some fog out over the ocean as the sun was setting, and couldn’t resist to head that way. Ended up doing some long exposures, with the wind finally letting up so using a tripod was possible again. Now heading to the airport as my brief stopover is about to be over. If you have a chance to visit Iceland during the winter, I’d say don’t hesitate and just go. I highly recommend it!

4 quick exits from yesterday’s adventure in the highlands of Iceland. I made it here just after 4000 people were stranded at KEF airport. Heavy snowfall and high winds of 70-100 kph (gusts up to 140+) have closed numerous roads, so I decided to spend my first night near the airport. Yesterday morning conditions had improved so that I felt it might be possible to start getting out there. Roads were ok, and the blowing snow creates amazing conditions for photography. I made it to my hotel safely, but managed to get stuck in a snow drift on their parking lot. Yup. Embarrassing 😂. Staff who wanted to help and pull me out got stuck themselves and so we ended up digging out a third vehicle which pulled us both out. Yet another testament to the amazing friendly people of this country - they didn’t have to help me but didn’t hesitate. Had the best burger dinner afterwards (see my story). Weather has improved further now, and I’m heading out for more. Really happy with my first 4 quick edits from yesterday...

Photographing icons ?! This popular view was photographed during my first ever journey to the Lofoten, Norway. This is likely the most iconic view of the area, photographed here using a long 8 minute exposure with my Phase One Achromatic Digital Back. I remember that I was the only photographer on the bridge that day, but in recent years, this location has gotten very, very busy. When I drove past here with my workshop last year, there must have been 3 dozen photographers all lined up tripod to tripod. So we didn’t bother stopping and instead decided to concentrate our efforts on other areas. Fortunately this photograph is taken from a bridge, so having many photographers around doesn’t destroy the ‘natural’ habitat - but other iconic views lie in much more fragile environments.

What’s your opinion on photographing popular vistas aka icons? Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below 😊

One of my favourite photographs from last year. Photographed with my iPhone from the comfort of inside my car, no less. With heated seats on 😂 For a guy who travels with one of the most expensive still cameras available, this photograph shows the importance of being at the right place at the right time. Gear doesn’t matter. And it took virtually no effort either. So if you think you need the latest camera, fly to the furthest place on the globe and hike for days, all in order to get a ‘good’ photograph, well, think again! What this photograph also shows is the power of inclement weather - snow was blowing sideways, which is why I chose to stay inside the car, and heading back to our hotel was a true adventure with whiteout conditions and snow piling up so high we almost got stuck. On a sunny day, this photograph wouldn’t have worked. I’ll be heading back to Norway with my workshop next month...and I cannot wait 😊

First post of 2020! Trees on the Prairie. Taken last year during my Winter and Minimalism Photography Workshop I teach every year together with the extraordinary Olivier Du Tré. Next workshop coming up in a few weeks, January 30 to February 2. Due to a last minute cancellation, we still have one seat left! For details just follow the link in my bio. Yes it will be cold but the photographic opportunities are so very worth it! These are the scenes we’re hoping to photograph 😊 Wishing you all a great start to the new decade and hope to see you in winter wonderland late January!

So there you have it. My best 9 of 2019 according to you. I want to thank you all, sincerely, for your support, likes and comments. This collection, albeit all B+W, also show a lot of variety. Exposure time range from 1/500 to 15 minutes. 8 photographs were taken with Phase One equipment, and one with my iPhone. Geographically, 5 were taken in Canada, and 4 in Norway. But each of these photographs stands for much for than the actual time it took to create them...I remember the story behind each, how I felt in the field and how I felt when I was ‘finished’ with the post production. As photographers were only as good as our next photograph - that means that our past informs the way we take photographs in the future. In this spirit I cannot wait to see what 2020 has in stock for me :) A Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year to you all - from my family to yours! .zone

Getting lost on the horizon. Taken during my last trip to the Prairies (near Saskatoon). We got blessed with lots of snow and great soft light. Cannot wait to be back in just a few short weeks 😊
