Looking back at this picture, I still can't believe we actually made it here. As we traveled through South America a few years ago, right after covid restrictions were starting to lift, we still had to work around closed land borders by connecting multiple flights rather than taking a $25 bus ride, only to end up stuck in La Paz due to a local strike preventing access to the salt flats. Considering we only planned to stay in Bolivia for 4 days, and already lost 2 of those waiting for the strike to resolve, we decided to take our chances by hopping on the only overnight bus that would bring us to the strike's location, walking 30min in order to pass the roadblock (a sketchy thing to do around 4am in the middle of nowhere ), and hopping on another bus to continue the journey. We'd visit the flats, do the same thing back the same evening, and continue our travels to Chile.
Absolutely worth it, I'd say, especially after we got the news the strike was resolved 5 minutes after the bus left the station and we'd travel to the flats directly (phew!).
A place that has honestly redefined our sense of scale.
