As an amateur photographer and also someone who believes in the importance of discussing mental health and wellness, I am a big supporter of The One Project and their work to bring awareness to issues like anxiety, depression, and mental health. In Canada 1 in 5 Canadians suffer from some form of depression or anxiety and less than half of them have ever asked for help. In the US, it is the 10th leading cause of su***de with tens of thousands of people taking their lives every year.
Photography allows me to express all the things that I see and feel, but sometimes can't find the words to describe to share with others. It can draw deep emotions, show you a different way to experience the world around you, and by practicing it, you exercise your focus and gain the ability to capture momentary lapses of beauty that would otherwise be drowned out by the hustle and bustle of the world around us. One thing I love most about photography is the fact that anyone can take part in this art-form and there is no wrong way to show self expression.
