I thought I'd share a glimpse into how I created my first levitation photo. I shot this as a single frame right as the sun dipped below the clouds for more diffuse light.

Josephine is leaning on a small backless chair balanced atop a step ladder, both of which are removed with some detailed Photoshop magic โœจ Her arm that supports her upper body is also Photoshopped out and replaced with her arm from another shot to really complete the floating illusion. Oh, and the reflections in the water had to be corrected as well.

The waves were tricky to work with on this day, but I noticed that when the forward wave receded, water ran overtop of her hand which added to the scene. I timed my shot for this but it had to be before the next wave hit the ladder (which would have created unwanted ripples). I find that all the little details add up.

Will be sharing more in my stories!

Story: For the better part of the night, I was trying to avoid getting this cold metal structure in my photos. There was always a tough pole or bar in the way. Then, I suddenly stopped fighting. Why not use it? The mix of artificial and natural seemed interesting so I positioned the structure to frame the point where the milky way touched warm city lights glowing behind the mountain. What's your opinion? Do you think it worked out, or should I have told the bars "fight me!" ๐Ÿ˜‚

Thought I'd share a bit about how I took this shot. This beautiful tree is just opposite the lighthouse in Stanley Park. First, I placed the bride on the right so that golden light from sunset would light up her face. Second, I stood much further away to get the entire tree in frame, so one of the challenges was giving directions to the couple. I called the groom on my cell and had him hold his phone in his left hand while I was on speakerphone. I then gave him instructions (e.g. take a step forward) and had him relay to the bride (e.g. tell her to turn her face slightly toward the sun). Then finally, just before I clicked the shutter, I told the couple the magic words: "Say cheese!" ๐Ÿ˜‚

I'm teaching a photography workshop on Saturday, October 27th about how to take photos of stars, the milky way, and northern lights ๐Ÿ˜Š It'll be held in Vancouver with limited seating. Lemme know if you'd like more info!

Story: I was in Iceland and had just driven a few hours at night to get away from clouds. As I drove, I suddenly spotted green aurora arcs dancing across the sky! So I pulled over, grabbed my camera, and ventured onto a flat rocky field. It was a chill night, about 2 degrees Celcius and I was shocked to find a perfectly motionless pool of water which I used for the reflection! At that point, I may have done a ridiculously silly dance to celebrate. Maybe. Well, I don't quite remember the details now ๐Ÿคซ

I'm honored and tremendously excited to be speaking at the Vancouver International Photography Festival a week from now, on September 22nd at VanDusen Botanical Garden. My seminar is Exploring the Night Sky, so come join and learn more about how to capture photos in the dark!

The story behind this photo is pretty crazy. This is the view that greeted a friend and I when we exited the forest after a 12 hour hike. We wouldn't have even seen it had we not been sidetracked earlier descending a talus slope. I was only able to take a few photos because clouds quickly rolled across the sky. Sometimes when you least expect it, Mother Nature likes to show you something magical!
