Comment “FLASH” for all the details

Everything you need to know about off camera flash to create these dramatic detail images.

Start with these camera settings (shutter 1/200, Aperture f/4, ISO 200)

Now with the transmitter attached to your camera’s hotshoe, make sure you’re on the same channel, ID and group.

If you’re holding your flash while shooting, TTL should accurately determine the correct flash output.

But, if your flash is stationary and you’re moving around for different angles, manual is the better choice.

You can start around 128th power and adjust from there or use TCM. Every camera brand calls it something different, but it basically says, “Hey, whatever TTL just did, I like that, let’s keep it”

It takes the last automatic exposure and converts it into a manual power setting, so now you don’t have to guess your starting point. Instead just fine tune from where you are.

For close up details, having the flash slightly higher than the camera and slightly to the side will give you that classic evening feel.

While placing the flash slightly in front of the camera will create a haze effect.

For all the camera and lighting settings and equipment, save time and comment FLASH.

Comment “gallery” for all the info

While I appreciate all the new design templates in Pic-Time 2.0, I’ve personally been waiting for the ability to upload my own custom fonts and to choose my own colour palettes.

To me, this is the only way, I can really make the gallery feel cohesive with our brand and our site.

What’s really cool is that after I’ve chosen the three colours to represent a gallery, Pic-Time automatically generates a full palette of 20 colours to compliment my choices. Everything from what colour the buttons are when you hover over them, to the colour when you click it. And of course you can see all your changes live in the designer tool.

Super cool that Pic-Time keeps updating and making the platform better and better.

Our bride was a little stressed about the rain in the forecast but luckily for us the sun peaked through during our portrait session for literally a couple of minutes. We jumped at the opportunity and had our couple stand right at the top of a small hill where the sun was beaming in.

We love showing our couples the back of our cameras, not for the potential compliment but because we get to witness the moment they see themselves the way we do.

Save for the next time you’re editing
Our must know Lightroom Shortcuts:

1. Match total exposures Ctrl + Alt + Shift + M (PC), Command + Option + Shift + M (MAC)

Edit one photograph, select the rest and while on the active file press the shortcut to enable Match Total Exposures.

2. Switch crop between portrait and landscape orientation - X (for both PC and MAC)
Simply press the letter X while in cropping mode, it will switch orientations back and forth while keeping the original aspect ratio.

3. Hold option while dragging in corners to have all corners come in simultaneously. Hold command (MAC) while clicking and dragging to use the angle ruler option.

Comment “BATTERIES” for the info

It’s come to my attention that I’ve been charging batteries the slow way for ages when there’s a perfectly simple and inexpensive way to do it faster and smarter.

This isn’t a sponsored post, I did my research and found the perfect solution for us. A four bay charger for our Canon camera batteries. A quick note, because you’re charging four all at once you’ll need to have a powerful enough plug. Think about the small white charger block you get with an iPhone versus the bigger block you get with a laptop (the difference is how many Watts it can handle). If you use a smaller block, it’ll default to charging two at a time, which is fine if you’re not in a rush (overnight is perfect). It’ll automatically switch to charging the other two, once the first two are done. If you use a larger block, like a laptop charger, then it will charge all 4 at the same time.

As for the battery holder! My friend 3D printed it for me and actually started offering them on his instagram page so please go check it out and support him

We can take up to 9000 images on a wedding so anything to help the culling process is welcome. You know that feeling when you’ve “got” the shot. When it just hits? That’s when you want to push that rate button on the back of your camera.

Learning to do this on the day will save you hours if not days of culling through images looking for shots to send as previews, to share to vendors and of course images you want to share on socials.

Pro tip! If you’re shooting duo cards, which I hope you are, then make sure you’re rating onto the same card you plan to load from later on. Just check that your camera is previewing images from the same card you load from and you’re all set.

Sometimes we forget what an incredible place we get to call home. This spot is just an hour away from our apartment. Well an hour and 20 minutes if you include the gondola ride up the mountain :)

If you’re just getting into wedding photography or aspiring to be a professional, don’t feel like you have to buy the newest best gear that exists. I don’t think this is a hot take but correct me if I’m wrong.

I used top-tier professional camera is almost always better and smarter of an investment than buying a brand new entry or mid-level model. We personally have been shooting with Canon forever so we’ve got nothing but good things to say about the Canon R6mk2 and the Canon R5, which we currently use.

if you’ve got a used camera store in the neighbourhood or you’ve had good luck on Facebook marketplace that would be a great place to start, otherwise we would recommend B&H Photo used camera department. They’re really honest about the condition, the shutter count and even give a in-store warranty for 90 days, which you won’t get from FBM.

None of this is meant to be an ad. It’s simply our recommendation for getting started and getting really amazing equipment, but not breaking the bank at the same time.

Creating that dreamy feel when photographing table top details is as easy as setting up an LED continuous light and setting the white balance to just above the colour of the candles. Around 3200-4200 Kelvin. This will allow you to maintain that cosy, warm feeing of the candles while allowing the rest of the image to appear naturally white.

Keeping your aperture wide open also helps, as having some soft blur in the foreground and background adds to the vibes.

After applying your preset, adjust your white balance to match the settings you used on your LED light which will balance the light and give you a natural look. A radial mask is always handy when you want to add a pop of exposure and finally lowering the contrast will give the overall image a soft dreamy feel.
