I think we often forget how quickly we evolve until we see it held up in a photograph. This was my third time documenting this family, and walking into with them felt like picking up a conversation right where we left it. I don’t take the invitation lightly. To be asked back into your inner circle, to see the kids grow taller and their personalities shine brighter, is the soul of why I do this.

A film story for a growing family.

I’ve realized that my favourite way to work is as a human first, and a photographer second.

This afternoon didn’t start with a shot list or a set of poses. It started slowly as I got my cameras together in their living room getting to know one another, and sharing snacks at the kitchen table while the light found its way into the house followed with a walk around the block. I wanted to be a guest in their space, someone who was there to witness the connection, not curate it.

There is a reactive beauty to shooting film in these moments. It requires a heart of service and a quiet eye. I’m not looking for “perfection”; I’m looking for the way the cosmos shadows trace patterns across a mother’s belly, or the weight of a toddler’s hand resting on a sibling she hasn’t met yet.

When we stop treating our lives like a photoshoot and start treating them like a homecoming, everything just happens organically. These frames are a reminder that your life, in all its quiet and unposed glory, is already art. 🎞️

More 35mm film favourites from this film only session with Hannah & Zack on the Sunshine Coast last year.

I’ve been sitting on these for a while, but looking back at the full gallery today made me realize how much I love this set.

Are you a traditional family portrait person or a small quiet details person? Honestly my favourite is slide 10; traditional but with a little fun 😎 ☀️ 🌊 🎞️

In thirty years, the file formats will change and the apps will be different but a physical negative, a printed page, and the organic grain of a memory will still be there.

I’m choosing the feeling over the perfection. The heartbeat over the hardware.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the most authentic smiles happen when everyone is relaxed. Skipping the travel and the ‘perfect’ outdoor spot means we can just focus on each other. It turns out that ‘right here’ is always the best place to be photographed, because it’s where your family’s story actually happens. 🏡 🎞️
