Being candid - a real conundrum for the modern day photographer.

In the industry that I am in, photographs can tend to become photo shoots, and in doing so, the real candid can sometimes get lost. There is a process involved in achieving candid now, that as photographers we have learnt in cues, in pretending an ease, in our social behaviour, to try to achieve - what we call a candid photograph. (And hope that sometimes we get that moment that is the true candid and it mostly only happens when we put down the camera). When photographing adults, creating a sense of ease and play in front of the camera is often a process. We have to work towards it. There is an awareness of being photographed, and sometimes we can move past that awareness and sometimes we can’t.

But unexpectedly photographing so many little kids this year has made me really enjoy what that word means and rethink the process.

With little kids, there is no such process.
There is simply their process of play. they get curious, they move from one thing to another, they lose interest, they come back, they explore. Most of the time, they are simply unaware of it.

In June, we organised our first Mini Sessions in Toronto, inviting families and couples who wanted to update their life photographs in a quick & easy way.

As usual, I knew my spots, where people will photograph better and so on- but the second I met Bella, I forgot about all the cues, all the planning I had done. She taught me that I wasn’t supposed to treat it as a photo shoot. In a few moments I realised, this was all I had wanted as someone who photographs people. I just had to follow her curiosity and see what she saw and hope to document her as her beautiful little self.

This year has been an unexpected amount of little kids in front of my camera - of all my clients whose weddings I have photographed years ago are now growing into beautiful families, allowing me again into their lives and their kids teaching me insights into my own process.

The importance of ‘auspicious time’ in religious Indian wedding ceremonies is considered meaningful and far beyond scheduling.

The rituals for Durkka & Pavi started as early as sunrise surrounded by family, friends and faith. As a photographer, I know about the importance of time, but not necessarily in a way I understand it. What I do know, the earlier the wedding ceremony, the better the morning tea!

The ‘auspicious window of time’ has such an important influence in Indian wedding ceremonies where it’s believed that the ritual is to be most effective when it’s performed in harmony with the cosmic rhythms.

Documented moments from Durkka & Pavithran’s wedding day that started at sunrise surrounded by family, friends & faith.

Strangely surreal when friends you have known as kids have little kids of their own and build little families🤍

I have seen them go on their first date, which happened ages ago to this new guy addition (clearly a setup for this moment :))

This 1925 Charles Dickens edition of The Pickwick Papers found me in 2019 at a thrift store for just 2 dollars! It’s filled with illustrations by ‘Phiz’ from 1836.

I have not read the book fully because it requires me to pick up the dictionary more than 10 times in a page, but once the rhythm happens, it’s the funniest book I have ever picked up! I remember when I had picked it up in 2019, I had a literal laugh out loud moment in a park.

Almost wanting to pick it up again next!

A little humour in love here today✨

(Also the effort & pure craft in everything done a 100 years ago seems a 100 times greater)

Freshly Married ♥️

A casual early morning walk in Toronto just one week after the wedding and still soaking it all in✨

I want to manifest photographing more couples soon after their wedding. It’s such a wonderful time. All the hectic and stressful feelings of planning a wedding and the commitment fear are past, and the fresh surrender to love makes one so happy and giddy ☺️

(I am a third wheel in too many relationships now)

That indie love story we’ve all been waiting for...

It feels like it’s been forever since we had a truly feel-good indie romance. The kind that leaves you with butterflies and believing in the possibility of that sweet true love!

If I ever pitched a film, it would be inspired by these two.

Until then, photographs of Sandeep & Ian sharing moments with each other during their welcome event in Portugal ✨

This beautiful quote is from Herman Hesse’s 1922 novel, Siddhartha. I picked up this novel from my husband’s book collection and for how small this book is, it gave me a lot.

~ Water shapes stone not through brute force, but through relentless consistency.

For many years now I have been exploring Buddhism in practice and theory (of course not fully) but it heavily mirrors the daoist philosophy that the softest things in the world overcome the hardest, that love changes the human heart permanently.
