A stop. Amboy California resides on an alignment of Route 66 running through the Mojave desert, a town by passed by I40 and left to deteriorate into another of the hundreds of disappearing California ghost towns. However, in 2005 Albert Okura felt it was his destiny to buy what was left of the town and restore it as much as possible to its 1950s peak style. This was a stop I felt we had to make on our recent Route 66 journey, and a perfect California morning set up this iconic scene as much as anything else we saw in our 18 days along the route. This one shot made that morning worthwhile.

From our Route 66 trip in May, a view from the National Trails Highway near Amboy in California, looking east toward the Mojave National Preserve. These views of ranges of hills and mountains that are almost two dimensional and blue in the midday sun are a favorite of mine. I have had the opportunity to travel frequently in the past two years and I'm considering relaunching my Blue Marble regular posts looking at scenes, some not previously published, from these travels. Route 66 created many of those and would definitely figure in those images.

An early morning visit this week to Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver to see the amazing weather that the city has put on for the FIFA World Cup games, and just because it's June and what we often get this time of year. The other thing of note is that cruise ships are coming packs, but if you're going to get 330 sailings in about 6 months that's the amount of activity it is going to take.

Kees Neirop is clearly the oldest rookie in the current Western Canadian Radical cars championship. He is also probably the most experienced driver in the series with years of Porsche championships, endurance racing at Sebring and Le Mans, and many laps of Area 27 as race series manager and lead instructor. Kees ran his second series weekend, improved his average finishing position, and moved up to 3rd place in the Masters championship. His experience is obvious, without drama on track and finishing each race with an intact car showing the value of consistency in serious racing.

Mitch Cooper in the 399 Radical on the move at corner 14 in the first lap of the June feature race on Sunday afternoon. He has already passed two cars on this 1st lap to move up from 9th to 7th, and will pass two more to get to a 5th overall, and 4th in class before the race ends. With his second place finish in the first race on Saturday Mitch had a good points-haul picking up 40 points on the weekend to stay just ahead of Chris Beith and hold onto 2nd overall.

Chris Beith's green monster car holding off newcomer Sam Beswick in the feature race two weeks ago. Both Chris and Sam had a good weekend, Chris had three podium finishes over the weekend and Sam had two for some good championship points. Chris has moved up to 3rd in the standings, only 4 points behind 2nd place Mitch Cooper. Lots of drama can happen yet in the last 9 races over the summer months.

A few photos from the area around BC Place Stadium in Vancouver yesterday, about 2 hours before the game started as fans arrived. The atmosphere was good, people enjoying the experience. There is one photo of a block of Smithe Street, close to the stadium, that was closed off around several restaurants where an hour before the game it was already full.. Quite an afternoon - a once in a lifetime experience for many. #

This groups of 6 drivers coming through turn 4 and headed to turn 5 at basically raced together for the entire 8-lap sprint race during the recent June race weekend. I have a several shots of these cars in different sequences as they passed back-and-forth, and generally had what looked like a great time on track.
