We are very glad that Heart of the Fraser is part of our Virtual Film Festival which begins Friday!

This movie showcases the extraordinary environmental aspects of this unique ecosystem, the profound landscape changes resulting from development following the start of European settlement, and the need and efforts to protect and restore the gravel reach from further environmental degradation.

You can see the full movie and a range of other award-winning films for only $10.

We are thrilled to be presenting this Water Rangers video! Looking forward to the conversation as part of our second night of films looking at sustainable fishing.

Despite the deep awareness Lawrence Gunther of Blue Fish Canada has about fish health issues across Canada, you will never meet a more enthusiastic expert. One thing that helps keep him positive is his philosophy when he’s on the water.

Lawrence lost his sight at a young age. For most people, fishing without seeing would be a barrier. Not for Lawrence, though:

"I’m a citizen scientist when I’m on the water… When I’m on the water, my world expands. There’s no walls. There’s no ceilings. There is nothing to shut in. What I’m hearing, what I’m sensing, my place in the universe becomes very small."

Lawrence is a huge advocate for water health, with a well-known passion for promoting sustainable fishing practices, connecting people to waterways, and prompting people to take action.

Our first highlight: Night 1: Celebrating Canada's Oceans. The evening’s feature film, The Last of the Right Whales, showcases the plight of the North Atlantic right whale, following their migration and the people committed to saving a species still struggling to recover from centuries of hunting. With unprecedented access to film the whale migration, Last of the Right Whales brings a message of hope about the most at risk great whale on the planet, captured through stunning cinematography.

The film will be followed by a Q&A with members of the film’s production team and the marine biologist who worked on the film. This will be an exciting opportunity to learn about how documentaries are made!

The Festival of Ocean Films is back! We are so excited to see you in February. We are accepting film submissions until November 13 - so please help us spread the word.

For the first time, the Festival will be a part of the global IMPAC 5 Canada conference.

This forum brings together ocean conservation professionals and high-level officials to inform, inspire and act on marine protected areas, so this will be a great showcase.

We’re looking for documentary film submissions, of all lengths, that inspire us to reflect on the relationships we each hold with the ocean and inspire action.

Submit your films by November 13 and share this opportunity with other filmmakers you know!
