2026. I have so much to be thankful for.

I just wrapped another amazing wedding season, and I am doing what I always do at this time of year- counting my lucky stars that this is actually my job.

I am extra thankful (and a bit sad) about something else this year, though. My second shooter, assistant, partner in crime, main-squeeze, forever hype girl, Nadine.

After 5 incredible seasons together, Nadine has photographed her last wedding with me earlier this month. She is leaving BC. Headed east to put down some roots & be closer to her family. It is a logical move for her and the start of an exciting new chapter... But, guys, to make this about me for a second, I'm pretty f*ing sad.

Nadine has been an invaluable asset to my business, my life, & every single wedding that she's attended with me since July 2021. Not only is she an incredible photographer (photos she has taken make up 1/4th of my average wedding gallery) but she's reliable, trustworthy, funny as hell, and absolutely relentless in her pursuit of cellphones in pockets during family photos.

Don’t worry- I have found another wonderful photographer to fill the role that Nadine is leaving behind. This new person is lovely and will bring her own skills & flavour to the weddings that we photograph together. I am excited to get to know her in 2027

I have a theory about why "Golden Hour" portraits are often the best ones from a wedding day, and it has less to do with "Golden Hour" than you might think.

"Golden Hour" photos are the best because they're taken long after all the most stressful parts of a wedding are over.

The ceremony is behind you. Your family photos are done. Even the "formal" wedding party photos are a thing of the past. You're super comfortable with your photographer at this point, because you've spent the last 5/6/7 hours with them. You barely even notice when they have their cameras pointed at you anymore.

You've eaten dinner. You had a couple glasses of ch*****ne. You are long past caring if your dress or shoes get dirty. You're not stressed about whether your Grandma will be able to make it, or if the rain will hold off, or if the florist sent the peonies that you specifically asked for. The train has long-since left the station and all you can do now is enjoy the ride.

You are more embodied and relaxed than you have been all day (possibly all month!) So when your photographer asks you if you feel like going for a 15-minute walk to get some fresh air & watch the sunset, your only question is, "Do I have to put my shoes back on?"

THIS is why Golden Hour photos on your wedding day are worth it! It's not about the light (although, the light really is gorgeous and certainly doesn't hurt).. it's about the headspace that you two are in at that point of the day. Headspace makes all the difference ❤️

When it rains just before your wedding ceremony begins you have 3 choices:

1. Decide to hold off for half an hour. Pull guests from their seats, and sprint for cover. Hope that given 20-30 minutes the worst of it will roll over.

2. Rapidly pivot to an alternative covered location (providing you have one?) Everyone jumps up, and rushes to the other spot.

3. Say "F**k it", and get married anyway. Maybe as you are literally walking down the aisle, your groomsmen will rush and grab the janky camping tent that had been utilized earlier in the day to keep your signing table dry.

Maybe they place it at the head of the aisle to cover you-- not exactly the most aesthetic decision-- but at least you, your wedding party, and Officiant will stay dry-ish. Your guests might be absolutely drenched but will manage to survive (the joy in their hearts keeping them warm)

Maybe exactly as you are signing the documents making it official, the rain will stop and you might be able to walk back down the aisle as newly weds with the sun peaking out through the clouds.

Maybe.
