An Indigenous name given to this land, “Tkaronto” is often understood as “where there are trees standing in the water,” a reference to fishing weirs that sustained Indigenous communities north of here.

Over time, the name travelled and evolved. It reminds us that Toronto’s story began long before the city itself and is rooted in Indigenous knowledge, care for the land, and responsibility to one another.

During Indigenous Peoples Month, as FIFA World Cup 2026 brings the world to our city, we acknowledge the land we gather on and proudly share Toronto’s Indigenous roots.

Today, Mayor Chow presented the Key to the City to award-winning animator, story artist, writer and director Maggie Kang 🎥

Kang is best known for co-writing and directing the worldwide phenomenon KPop Demon Hunters, which took home the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2026. A veteran of the animation industry, Kang has worked on many blockbuster movies. Her work has delighted and entertained audiences young and old all across the world.

Born in Seoul, Kang was raised in Toronto and attended Sheridan College, where she studied animation. Her career reflects the enduring strength of Toronto’s animation sector and overall film scene.

Congrats again Maggie! We can’t wait to see what you’ll come up with next; whatever it is, we know it's gonna be golden 😇
