and we are Tkaronto.
An Indigenous name given to this land, “Tkaronto” is often understood as “where there are trees standing in the water,” a reference to fishing weirs that sustained Indigenous communities north of here.
Over time, the name travelled and evolved. It reminds us that Toronto’s story began long before the city itself and is rooted in Indigenous knowledge, care for the land, and responsibility to one another.
During Indigenous Peoples Month, as FIFA World Cup 2026 brings the world to our city, we acknowledge the land we gather on and proudly share Toronto’s Indigenous roots.
