Daffodils, sakura and tulips - the trio of storied spring flowers

The spring floral parade in Toronto (and other urban centres) is attended by many flowers. Three in particular stand out because of their symbolism and history dating back nearly a century: daffodils, sakura and tulips.

Toronto woke up to seemingly overnight appearance of daffodils all over the city. Another sure sign of spring? Maybe ... These yellow beauties will soon be followed by tulips, cherry blossoms as the Toronto flower parade marches us through spring, summer and fall.

Yesterday was the official first of 2026. But clouds obscured the view. The photo I took wasn't bad. But not the best henge photo either. But, contrary to popular narrative, TorontoHenge (or ManhattanHenge) is not a one-day phenomenon. If the clouds clear this afternoon, there will more spectacular photos begging to be taken.

As the third and last post of this triptych, here is the . While the architect was Canadian Thomas Canfield Pomphrey, the Canadian most famously associated with this building is Roland Caldwell Harris, Toronto's erstwhile Public Works Commissioner who championed, managed and influenced many projects underpinning the city's expansion in the first half of the 20th century.

Another iconic building designed by an iconic Canadian architect is the .reference, the masterpiece of Raymond Moriyama. Born in BC, Moriyama and his family were amongst over 20,000 Japanese-Canadians sent to internment camps during WWII. There, he built a treehouse as an act of escape from his confinement. Later, he would go on to design the and the Reference Library, which was originally located at College and St. George (this building is now the Kofler Centre at U of Toronto).

If truth be told, I visited the as much for the art that is the place as for the art in the place.

If truth be told, I was a bit miffed when their restaurant was renamed from Frank to … Bistro! It’s not too late to revert this move, AGO, to honour the iconic visionary.

A few Gehry projects in Toronto remain in progress or on the drawing board. May they turn out to be worthy of his name.

Did you know the season has begun in (and the Great Lakes in general)? Did you even know there was a surfing season in Toronto? I only learned of this during the pandemic, and have looked eagerly forward to photographing this small but dedicated community of aquatic athletes and adventurers every fall. Here is one such athlete rewarded with a sweet ride after patiently waiting for just the right wave at the Scarborough Bluffs.

My camera has caught more than its share of bunnies this spring and summer. Seeing them bounce around brings peace and joy to the mind.
