A Day of Unity and Empowerment at the Breaking Barriers Conference
On a bright Thursday morning, the Grand Cinnamon Banquet and Convention Center in Toronto buzzed with anticipation as attendees gathered for the “Breaking Barriers” conference. Organized by Settlement Assistance and Family Support Services (SAFSS), the event aimed to shed light on gender-based violence and gender identities within various diaspora communities.
The day commenced with a welcoming breakfast and a traditional cleansing ceremony led by Cat Criger, an Indigenous Elder. The ceremony, assisted by keynote speaker Carla Neto, Executive Director of Women’s Habitat of Etobicoke, created a respectful and inclusive atmosphere, setting a powerful tone for the day’s discussions.
Keynote speaker Carla Neto emphasized the importance of confronting social issues directly. “It is crucial that as immigrant communities we address this social issue head-on by leaning in and breaking down stigmas and the isolation that surrounds these issues,” she remarked.
The event also featured a special message from Ward 7 Councillor Juanita Nathan on behalf of Mayor Frank Scarpitti and the Markham City Council, expressing deep appreciation for the efforts to build an equitable and inclusive community.
Following the keynote, the conference featured emotional testimonials from several attendees who shared their personal journeys of overcoming obstacles. A panel discussion with experts Paula, Shereen McFarlane, and Nuzhat Jafri offered further insights on supporting immigrant communities effectively.
The day concluded with an open floor session for questions and an award ceremony that recognized individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to breaking societal barriers.
Roger Ramkissoon, Chair of SAFSS, reflected on the gathering: “There are a lot of barriers that have already been broken when I look around. We are a diverse crowd, and we will continue to break those barriers.”
The “Breaking Barriers” conference not only highlighted critical issues but also celebrated the strength and resilience of the community in facing them together.
