Brian Deignan

Brian Deignan People, places, things are what I photograph; memory, imagination, wonder are how. Brian Deignan is a photographer living in Toronto.

Like most of us, as a child, I looked at the world around me with wonder and amazement. Now, many, many years later, tempered by life’s experiences, joyous, tragic and mundane, I still do. My perspective has changed of course, altered not just by age, but by the accumulation of millions of others’ impressions in the form of words, books, stories, magazines, newspapers, movies, plays, television, a

ds, internet, graffiti, pictures, paintings, sculpture, captions, sounds, voices, songs, jingles, chants, etc, etc, etc. But the wonder and amazement remains and they are what drive and inform my photography. He grew up in Montreal and lived for many years on Cape Cod, in San Francisco and in Burlington, Vermont. Each of those places has profoundly informed how he sees the world whether looking through a camera lens or not.

Once again, Happy Holidays to one and all!! Hoping you are all well, safe and able to celebrate with friends and family, if not in person then at least in spirit and, who knows, maybe “virtually” also. To that end here’s another reminder about a safe, social distancing shopping option which will also provide some much-needed support to the John B. Aird Gallery. I am very pleased to have to a glimpse of the second of my photographs in the 2020 Mistletoe Magic eAuction and Fundraiser now running through December 8th. Many local artists have donated their works (over 140 in total) as well and the opening prices are very reasonable. So take look, maybe make a bid or two and please pass this along to your art-loving friends!! Only 4 days left to find that special work of art.

I am very pleased and proud that my photograph August Afternoon - Bloor Station is among the 60 works of art to be auctioned at the Art Gallery of Mississauga's Benefit Art Auction next Wednesday, October 2nd.I am not a resident of Mississauga, nor do I spend a great deal of time there since Toronto seems to keep me pretty busy. But I do admire and support their Art Museum as strongly as I support all public institutions dedicated to providing access to and involvement with art in all its manifestations. As always I urge each of you to do the same wherever you live and work. And if it just so happens that it's Mississauga I definitely urge you to consider spending a few bucks and attending the gala. You'll be supporting a worthy cause, seeing a whole bunch of art and maybe even bidding on and acquiring some new art for your home. I'll be there and hope maybe I'll see some old friends and make some new ones

Headed over to Propeller Gallery to drop off my photograph which, I am proud to say, will be part of their Blue/Bleu Impulse exhibit (Feb.13-Mar.3). Hope you can make it to the Opening Reception Saturday, Feb.16 2-5 PM That way you'll find out which picture I selected.

Plus, after dropping off my work I get to go to the Cameron House to hear my dear friend and monster talent, Joanne Mackell serenade and entertain us from 7:00-9:00 PM tonight. Come on down!

Just want to remind all my friends, FB and otherwise, that I will proudly be in attendance at the AGM (Art Gallery of Mississauga) this Thursday, January 10th 6PM-8PM, for the Opening Reception & Awards of VAM41, the 41st Annual Juried Show of Fine Arts presented by Visual Arts Mississauga. I will likely be in close proximity to my photograph "August Afternoon - Bloor Station" but there are many other wonderful works for you to consider also. I encourage anyone who can to come by, see some art and support local artists and art institutions. Also, the exhibition runs until March 15th.

I especially urge my FB (and ex-Old Townie) friends who live in this area west of big bad Toronto to try and stop by. It would be great to see you Katherine Nickerson, Linda Brown, Ken Iverson, Rick Shapiro, Wendy Rice, Ted Thompson and John Lefebvre
