CMY 3 photograph, depicting the clarity and subtlety of COLOUR. This translucent cube has 2 sides Cyan, 2 sides Magenta and 2 sides Yellow. It is lit from above so that the Magenta mixes with Yellow to create Orange and with Cyan to create Blue. Take a moment to look at and study it. Let me know your reaction.

I’m photographing a new series based on “Colour”. From the standpoint of its derivation/definition, photography (writing with light) in its essence is all about capturing light, either bouncing off of or being absorbed by an object. This phenomena produces colour. The iconography of and expression through colour leads down many roads; the emotional, psychological, the spiritual and the sublime, as well as its many practical, utilitarian applications. Colour has been scientifically defined and explained. It’s been studied by psychologists and advertising people in an effort to discover its ability to manipulate emotions and compel behaviour. Artists have been observing and experimenting with colour…, well, for as long as there have been artists.

This photo I “drew” in Photoshop depicts the starting point for colour theory In Photography.

On the left I’m demonstrating what’s known as “Additive Colour” which is used when projecting images, for example, movies, computer screens and slide shows. It’s known as (RGB) Red, Green, Blue. As you can see here, when you overlap two of these “Primary” colours you create a “Secondary” colour, either Cyan, Magenta or Yellow (CMY). And when you overlap all three RGB colours you get White, as you can see in the middle of the three RGB colours.

On the right, the three circles of colour I’m demonstrating are known as “Subtractive Colour”. Subtractive Colour uses CMY and when you overlap any two of these colours you create one of the RGB colours or “Secondary” colour. CMY is used in all types of printing media, from fine art photos, to magazines to restaurant menus. When you overlap all three Subtractive Colours you get Black.

For “Additive Colour” think of projecting a movie in a dark Theatre. The theatre is pitch black and you are ADDING colour through projecting the movie.

For “Subtractive Colour”, think of drawing or painting any colours onto a white piece of paper, you can’t get more light than white. When you draw or paint on white you are SUBTRACTING from the “light” (or white) with each mark you make and if you just continue to pile on one colour after another you eventually end up with BLACK.

Elaine and I spent time at the AGO today.
I was very interested in, Sarindar Dhaliwal: “When I grow up I want to be a namer of paint colours”. I’m preparing a new series of fine art photographs based on colour theory and this photographer’s exploration of colour. So this current AGO exhibition is very on topic for me.
I had to visit some old friends too. I’m standing here beside a Josef Albers painting from his “Homage to the Square” series. He created something like 2,000 paintings in this series. All the ones I’ve seen are very good to sublime. He definitely put in the work.

“…It’s a disarmingly simple work, composed of superimposed squares of oil color applied with a palette knife directly from the tube onto a white, primed Masonite panel. It is part of a series that Albers began in 1950 and that occupied him for 25 years.” - Cornelia Lauf
