Photographing black dogs, or any pets for that matter, can be a challenging task. However, with the right techniques and a bit of patience, one can ensure that the subjects are well-posed and no details in texture is lost using simple equipment.
This photo set I achieved used a 2-light setup in my mom's living room. I highly recommend using OCF (Off-Camera Flash) and strobes if possible. The equipment I used included 1 strobe with an octo box, positioned at a 45-degree angle and my OCF behind the dogs at a 45 degree angle, and a small square soft box as a back light.
The back light is important because I wanted to make sure the dogs were distinguished from the background. Both lights were set to higher power, and I aimed to use the lowest possible ISO setting. I also maintained a high F-stop to ensure the dogs' full bodies remain sharp in the photo.
Last but certainly not least, use a reflector! When used correctly, a reflector can significantly enhance the quality of the photo. I positioned my reflector in front of the dogs, which helped bounce light on to the dark areas of their chests and necks while also making sure to get that additional catch light in the eyes.
In my opinion, photography is an art, and there's always room for experimentation. Capturing beautiful moments with our furry friends doesn't always require complicated settings, with a bit of patience and these techniques, you too can create stunning photographs. After all, the joy of photography comes from capturing those special moments with your loved ones!
