Been working on this project for the past few months for my senior project, and I'm happy to finally get to share it now!

My goal for this project was to shed light on people who pursue activities, hobbies, and passions where they might not be the "typical" person you'd see in that genre. It can sometimes be hard to pursue something when you do not see a representation you can relate to, but that does not stop a lot of people.
I hope these videos can inspire or motivate you to try something new, and not be scared to go for something you truly want!

I decided to explore the journey of three dancers from our dance community. We dug into why they still continue to pursue their specific styles, how they first got into it, and any barriers they had faced/continue to face on the way.

Programs: New Media Studies, Media Studies, and Psychology

Breaking The Norm () is a video series dedicated to exploring individuals who pursue activities, passions, and hobbies in aspects where they are not seen as the norm. This project's goal is to share these individual's stories and to inspire others to take a step into something new.
In this current series, we explore the obstacles and triumphs of those in the Toronto street dance scene. Join us as we explore three individual's stories:

1) Caerina Abrenica - pursues breaking, known to be a male-dominated and aggressive dance style.
2) Vinny Alayo - a straight male who pursues waacking which is known to be a female-dominated dance style. Although there are males who pursue waacking, a majority of them are of the LGBTQ community.
3) Tamami Gavrilovic - a 61-year-old woman who was born and raised in Japan. She currently resides in Toronto, Canada. She pursues popping and has only been dancing for a year now. Popping is known to be a male-dominated style.
