“You can continue to keep doing things and thriving and learning and growing any age that you are.” - Salima, 47
Salima's family’s roots are in Guyana, where music and culture remain central. She grew up in a close household with her twin and younger sister, all of them drawn to fashion but ultimately choosing careers in education and business. She’s currently working as a school principal and is a mother of two teenagers.
At 40, Salima and her twin sister decided to mark the milestone by climbing Mount Fuji. The two trained, packed their gear, and spent days making the ascent through shifting weather. Reaching the summit together was, in her words, “very triumphant.”
A more recent milestone is completing her doctorate while working full-time. As much as she wanted to quit sometimes, Salima broke the work into small steps and rewarded herself along the way. Defending her dissertation with her family present made the effort worthwhile, especially for her children to witness.
Her research focused on peace, studying the Gandhian principle of ahimsa: doing no harm to oneself, others, or the environment. That outlook guides her work as an educator, where she finds joy in supporting students and young teachers. She also stays grounded in family, with her late grandmother’s example of strength and independence shaping how she approaches the years ahead.
Salima looks toward her 50s with optimism, seeing them not as a limit but as another chapter.
