I initially set out to choose a couple pictures to mark the New Year and briefly share my thoughts—“Out of the Fog and Into the Light…” However, my writing took a gloomier and more extensive turn than intended—lol. Nevertheless, here's my 2023 summary.
New Year’s Eve celebrations haven’t felt remotely celebratory to me for a long, long time… Unlike birthdays, where we celebrate the blessing of being alive for a specific number of years, celebrating our accomplishments so far, New Year's Eve always seemed to me like a farewell party for the long-awaited termination of yet another abominable year.
New Year’s Eve is, in fact, a COLLECTIVE BIRTHDAY for all humanity. And Frankly, it seems to me that every year, humanity -collectively- behaves in such a dark, appalling manner that we must light up the skies and dance on the streets worldwide to celebrate the end of this tumultuous chapter, marking the closure of the monstrosities that have taken place during that yearly span, yearning to start anew with hope.
On a personal level, we make resolutions, promising better eating habits, more exercise, less stress. As if the flip of one calendar digit will suddenly give birth to the new & improved version of our perfected self—though these resolutions usually falter, hope breeds eternal, and I must confess that I participate and cherish these New Year resolutions, though I never abide by them either.
With the turn of each year, we also seek astrological and celestial experts to read the stars, yearning for a divine intervention, hoping that this year, yes, finally this year prosperity will blossom, and darkness will retreat on all levels.
2023, in particular, has been one for the books- a year to remember where global darkness reigned brutally once again and wars exploded in far too many places. Those privileged, paralyzed by greed and fear, became accomplices to the cruel trauma and death of thousands of innocents. They closed their eyes once again to the documented undeniable suffering of humanity, and casually discussed ideologies and proportionality as if lives don’t matter.
