If you could only shoot two focal lenghts, which would you choose? Academy-Award-winning cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw, ASC captured Sinners with just two focal lengths of the Panavision Ultra Panatar anamorphic lenses. Arkapaw also combined 15-perf IMAX – the tallest film format – with the ultra-wide 5-perf Ultra Panavision 70 for a first-of-its-kind visual experience.

Hybrid storytelling meets performance proof in Dyson's campaign for the new HushJet™ Mini Cool fan. DoP Victor Gueret takes us behind the scenes of the refreshing spot, supported by Panavision London.

“From the outset, we wanted the thermal signature to evolve progressively throughout the film,” Gueret tells us. “That required a dual-camera workflow, with a Sony Venice 2 and a FLIR thermal unit running simultaneously. The thermal aspect required very specific expertise, and Panavision played a key role in helping us identify the right technical specialists. It led me to think beyond visible-spectrum cinematography, working with phenomena that neither the eye nor a conventional sensor perceives. In one instance, my gaffer Greg Probert and I lit a scene with a 20K T12. The image on the Venice was perfectly clean, yet the thermal camera showed a massive flare that we could never explain. Moments like that highlighted how different the two imaging systems are.

Because both image streams had to align in framing, parallax, & timing, and we were shooting multiple plates for compositing, motion control was the most reliable solution. My choice of camera is usually driven by aesthetics, but here, the primary drivers became data integrity, VFX flexibility, and the mechanical realities of the motion control rig. The camera body needed to be compact enough to sit on the arm, and leave space for the thermal camera to be mounted as close as possible to the optical axis. Minimizing the distance between sensors was critical to ensuring the two fields of view could be matched – that led me to the Venice 2 paired with the Rialto 2 extension system. Splitting the sensor block from the body allowed us to drastically reduce mass on the arm while still capturing full-resolution RAW, which was essential.

Working with Panavision feels like the possibilities are endless. Our conversations are insightful and stimulating; that makes prep feel exploratory rather than procedural. It’s incredibly reassuring to know the package is being shaped with sensitivity to both craft and storytelling. Special thanks to Victoria Harris and Aaron Medway for their eternal support!”

“Whatever the source is, whether it's the windows, the practicals, or stage ‘sun’, I try to motivate all of it. The Upshaws is a comedy, but it digs into real issues this family faces, so the light has to feel honest. If it doesn't, the emotional scenes don't land.”

Cinematographer Chuck Ozeas takes us behind the scenes on his tenure on the heartfelt sitcom, for which he’s received multiple Emmy-award nominations, including this year for his work on the Part 7 episode 'Indy Streets.'

“For 'Indy Streets,' taking that multicam discipline out of the studio and onto location at night is not the norm. We shot in a parking lot in Hollywood and embraced the streetlights nearby for ambience. We put two SkyPanel 360s in a Condor and mixed them, one in a steel blue, one in a sodium v***r look. The real puzzle is cross-shooting coverage when you don't have a grid over your head to light in two directions at once. At that point you have to embrace some frontal light and work to keep it feeling motivated and subtle. I also have to credit our producers, Netflix, and our captain of the ship Regina Y. Hicks for being open to ideas about how we could elevate the look of the show.

Our wing cameras carry Panavision Primo 11:1s – they're slightly softer and warmer than our center-cam glass with a little focus & exposure falloff at the edges, which makes them ideal for close-ups. The actors look beautiful on them. The center cams are on Fujinon 20-120s[…] Since those are sharper edge to edge, I worked with David Dodson at Panavision to detune them slightly and introduce some focus falloff at the edges. We shoot SONY Venice in 4K, 2500 base, rated at 1600.

None of what you see on screen happens without my crew. My gaffer Chris Conway and his electricians, my key grip Gerhan ‘G’ Buggs and his grips, my operators and ACs, the whole camera department. They make it happen, FAST, all day long.

What inspires me today is the variety. I feel incredibly fortunate to move between singlecam, multicam, commercials, live stage & music. Each one teaches me something I carry on the next, and I don't think I'd light a sitcom stage the way I do without all of it.”

“FURIOUS draws from the visual language of New York crime dramas TAXI DRIVER & IN THE CUT, using the city’s darkness, texture, and isolation to reflect the psychological worlds of its characters,” says about his approach to the hit thriller. Supported by New York, Doug Emmett shot the series alongside DoP .

“We used classic techniques like silhouettes, frames within frames, and partial vision to build tension,” Emmett continues. “‘Visual cages’ became a photographic theme throughout as Catherine and Alice both try to control their world and break free of their past. These choices dissolved the boundary between hunter and prey, mirroring the characters' entangled psychology while reinforcing the series’ exploration of trauma, justice, and moral uncertainty. We were especially drawn to the fluorescent greens and deeply saturated reds of TAXI DRIVER; the damp, atmospheric quality was intentional, with wet-down streets and added exterior atmosphere echoing Scorsese's gritty mise-en-scéne.

Pilot Brian Kirk & I also referenced the work of Philip Lorca DiCorcia for his moody, saturated nighttime lighting. DiCorcia’s subjects, often photographed in practical spotlights – the glow of an open refrigerator or a pool of light from a flood lamp – became a visual motif for us.

Working with [Panavision SVP, Optical Engineering] Dan Sasaki to modify the G Series & lenses was such a gratifying process. Dan pushed the physical limits of the G series, stretching the vertical bokeh and softening the outer resolution, creating a much softer sweet spot for the lenses. We went heavier with wider focal lengths, while lending a gentle touch to the longer glass. Composing for a limited oval of sharpness was challenging but also rewarding, as it felt we were working with glass unique to FURIOUS. The T Series allowed us to mimic some of the modifications done to the G’s, and rounded out our set with modern optics, lending us greater flexibility. We were photographing flawed, complicated characters, and wanted the lens itself to reflect their imperfections and emotional complexity.”
