20 Years of Nature Conservation… and the journey continues

We are very proud that Nature Conservation Egypt (NCE) will be the official partner of the 5th edition of the Egypt Wildlife Photography Exhibition & Competition, in collaboration with the Egyptian Association for Wildlife Photographers “EAWP”.

Over the years, this exhibition has become one of the most important spaces bringing together photographers, nature lovers, and everyone who believes that photography can tell powerful stories, inspire emotions, and create real awareness about nature and wildlife conservation.

This year is especially meaningful for us, as it coincides with the celebration of NCE’s 20th anniversary, two decades of continuous work dedicated to protecting nature, conserving biodiversity, and safeguarding Egypt’s natural resources.

Throughout these years, photography has always been more than just beautiful images… It has been a powerful tool to showcase the beauty of nature, highlight the challenges it faces, and bring people closer to the incredible stories and details of the natural world.

We are proud to continue supporting this exhibition, the wildlife photography community, and everyone passionate about nature.
Looking forward to seeing your work and celebrating together not only the beauty of wildlife, but also a journey that is still ongoing

Owls are the favourite birds of many people. They are intriguing to us with their huge eyes, nighttime life, stealth, and the eerie way they move their necks. They are a symbol of , but in fact, their brains are quite small – those huge eyes take a lot of the space in their small skulls. Birds like corvids (crows, jays) and parrots are a lot smarter. Like the English song says “[the magpie is] More wise than any owl”.

Unfortunately, get a lot of paparazzi and unwanted attention when discovered. Never share the location of an owl you saw or photographed. If you see one/photograph it, do so as quickly as you can and as quietly as you can, without drawing attention to it, or waking it up if it’s sleeping (like in this photo). I see many photos with owls staring at the camera – that’s not a good thing!

Many owls rest in the mornings and would be asleep when we see them. Too much noise/attention will disturb its rest, stress it out, and potentially drive it away from a feeding area.

The mysterious beauty of mushrooms

Mushrooms are very important to the ecosystem. They help the forest recover nutrients from dead trees like this one and give them back to the soil.

The temperatures may be dropping again but we’ve gotten our first taste of spring, and spring migration has officially begun.

Since March 6th, there have been 5 American Woodcocks found in downtown Toronto, three of which were found alive.

Keep an eye out for injured birds this spring. Many more birds will collide with buildings as they migrate north to their breeding grounds. Make sure you know what to do should you find an injured bird: https://flap.org/finding-an-injured-bird/

If you find a bird needing help in the GTA, please call us (416 366 3527) for the speediest reply (and leave a voicemail!), messages on social media can be missed.

Famous for their tameness around humans, Spruce grouse are sometimes known as “fool hens”. These chickenlike birds eat mostly the needles of fir, spruce, and pine, like my friend here was doing.

Thanks to Lev Frid for guiding and spotting!

Today, the IUCN officially declared the Slender-billed Curlew extinct, marking the first known global extinction of a formerly widespread migratory bird species whose range included mainland Europe, North Africa, and West Asia.

“Two-thirds of bird species are in decline and the Slender-billed Curlew’s extinction serves as a poignant reminder that conservation frameworks must be implemented swiftly, backed by adequate science, resources and sustained political will, said Jacques Trouvilliez, the AEWA Executive Secretary.
