Horned Lark and Snow Bunting

I’m so behind posting on this page…if you want to keep up to date on my latest findings feel free to follow my Instagram page - .

Anyhow - here’s a couple cutie patootie birds that have now migrated to the Arctic Tundra to breed. Some Horned Larks stay behind and nest in Southern Ontario, but majority head north.

They’re both super cute, and during the winter months these guys can sometimes be found mixed together flying around in large groups in farmer’s fields. It’s really quite remarkable to see!

Snowy Owls

It’s been a great year for Snowy Owls!🙌🏻

Even though I only went out a couple times for them this season , I was pretty happy with my sightings!

For those who don’t know, males are all white and females have the the black barring. Although males are generally more sought after, I personally prefer the females! (Besides, they’re easier to find in the snow😉)

These owls winter in Southern Ontario, but will soon be making the long journey back to their breeding grounds in the Arctic Tundra!🤍

Red Squirrel

Red Squirrels are naughty…but so adorable!💕

These squirrels are commonly found in Northern Ontario but I’m starting to see more and more in Southern Ontario - including my first one in my backyard this week!

Pine Marten

Third time’s a charm!

It’s only taken me 3 trips to Algonquin to finally see a Pine Marten! This was one of my main target species and in fact - we actually saw 3 of them! I can’t believe this was my first time seeing one despite being born and raised in Northern Ontario!🤗

How adorable are they?🥰

Canada Jay

I always look forward to seeing Canada Jays in Algonquin! They’re such beautiful, social birds - and if you’re lucky, they’ll land on your hand! So adorable!💕

Common Raven

It’s always fun encountering Ravens in Algonquin!

Normally these guys are pretty skittish, but they’re used to being around people at certain spots in the park, so you can actually see them at close range!

This couple is always reliable at the Sifton Bog trail. They were pretty cute this year and I even caught them cuddling each other a couple times!🖤🖤

Pine Grosbeaks

Every Winter in Algonquin Provincial Park is so different from one year to the next!

This year was the “Year of the Pine Grosbeaks!” I haven’t seen one of these birds in 3 years…and these guys were the star of the show this year!🤩

These beautiful large, plump finches of the boreal forest were very reliable at the Visitor’s Centre this year much to the delight of all birders!

Because it’s a finch irruption year, many of the regular finches at Algonquin weren’t present as they all had to go south in search of better pine crops. I don’t know what contributes to poor pine crops, but when this happens all the finches go to Southern Ontario or further south in search of better pine crops as this is how they feed.

Although there have been many reports of Pine Grosbeaks in Southern Ontario, I feel like they actually had higher numbers than usual in Algonquin this year! I wish I understood this, but I don’t! I’m sure someone can explain it but just another reason why I find birds so fascinating!🤗

He’s a beauty!🤩

It’s a nice change finding a Red-Shouldered Hawk on a hydro wire instead of a Red-tail!🙌

These beautiful hawks are not common around here - so it’s pretty exciting to have one right in our city! He’s been pretty reliable lately - I really hopes he sticks around for a while!🤞

Ice Series!🥶

The recent Ice Storm was not only a homeowner’s nightmare, but also photographer’s dream! Although we lost a tree and many branches from other ones, it was hard to deny the beauty of the Winter Wonderland that was created! Truly Mother Nature at her best!🤩

Here’s some of my backyard “regulars”posing on some beautiful icy branches - enjoy!❄️❄️

I was grateful to find a Short-eared Owl on my first attempt this winter last weekend!🙌

You can certainly see in the pictures why they’re called Short-eared Owls! Forever my favourites! 🦉❤️

Northern Jacana (Juvenile)

It took me a while to figure out what these guys were…how fun to see some Juvenile Northern Jacanas! A first for me!🤗

I’m not sure how old these juveniles were as 2 of them were foraging on their own while this one was not leaving the nest. So darn cute!💕
