The long wait for the emergence of snakes is the hardest thing for me about spring. Most species in Alberta (like this wandering garter snake) don't start appearing until April, when ambient temperatures are warm enough for these exciting ectotherms to do their thing. 🐍

While beavers spend the entire winter in their lodge (only coming out to gather leaves from their underwater larder) muskrats must brave the cold to feed on water plants. Chilly days are my favourite time to watch these rodents gather greens from pond depths. đŸŒŋ

Even a big ol' bison needs a good scratch sometimes. While I didn't get any shots of this behaviour, this bull also scratched himself on the pointed stumps left behind by beavers at the pond. One ecosystem engineer helping another, I suppose. đŸĻĢ
