I can't really put into words the absolute awe and joy that came with photographing my first breaching Humpback after 15 years in the marine wildlife photography realm. I have seen humpbacks breach.. either at a distance or as one offs. But never have I gotten my camera up in time. Jokingly, I had started calling it my curse in the past several years.

Well, on this tour with Sea Wolf Adventures , that all changed, as Bartender the humpback breached 5 times near Gildford Island!

Identified by Marine Education and Research Society by using their online submission form for humpback whale flukes, they sent me the identification, first sighting (2018) and wintering grounds (Hawaii) for this individual.

The Canadian Pacific Humpback Collaboration project is unifying the cataloging efforts of multiple research groups who each focus on their own area of the BC Coast. The whales travel through all these regions and this allows researchers and citizen scientists to submit data within one region but collectively collaborate across them all.

I couldn't choose just one photo to represent my first ever Grizzly encounter so here's 6 of them!

This trip with Sea Wolf Adventures was incredible. Their team is so professional and highly knowledgeable about the lands and waters we travelled through. We felt absolutely safe with them watching over us while on the land with these bears and you knew that they could protect the bears from conflict as much as they could protect us. Coexistence was in the heart of everything they did!

We saw 4 bears total on our trip up the river including a male known as Roy Bidu (Little Roy) and a mom called Patience and her two cubs. The salmon were abundant and even the cubs were easily feeding on them.

I cannot wait to return again next year!

One of the T069D's catches a Cassin's Auklet near Port McNeill.

This was the final wildlife encounter of our incredible 9 hour tour with Sea Wolf Adventures and topped off an already spectacular day!

While birds are not a primary food source for Bigg's orcas, they are often used for hunting practice and young orca will target them to put skills to use, or perhaps for entertainment.

Most notably, Kʷiisaḥiʔis, was spotted hunting ducks in the lagoon while trapped near Zeballos a few years ago and they may have been a part of the diet that sustained her while isolated.

This encounter was a part of an incredible trip to the Telegraph Cove and Broughton Archipelago region and I am so excited to share all my photos with you!

The T077s in Bedwell Sound a couple evenings ago... over the past 3 days we have had 5 or 6 individual pods in Ucluelet and Tofino altogether, with multiple harbour visits as well!

A fried egg jelly among the eelgrass. These jellyfish can reach up to 2 feet wide across their bell with tentacles up to 10 - 20 feet long!

Juvenile crabs and other amphipods are known to hitch a ride on these (and other jellyfish) and use it as a method to more easy aquire food.

Fried eggs have a mild sting (though I haven't yet been stung by one myself).

A dreamy backlit encounter with the T109Bs last week off Tofino. They had successfully rustled up some dinner mid channel -Whether seal or porpoise, and the gulls let us all know it was meal time as they arrived to join in the feast.

Shorebird season brings so many incredible sights.. my favourite among them being incredibly well camouflaged killdeer chicks. They are precocial young, which means they are able to walk very shortly after hatching (also seen in other ground nesting species such as chickens). They blend in with their surroundings so well, that if they see you before you see them, and they freeze, you likely won't even notice them as you pass by! An important reason to watch your step!

The Amphitrite Lighthouse on the is such a beautiful beacon over the North entrance to Barkley Sound. Just a short walk down the trail found us spouting whales, a feeding bald eagle, crashing waves and of course, a spectacular sunset!
