Location: Painted Rock Nature Reserve, Thunder Bay District. Northwestern Ontario, Canada
Notes: Pictured Lake is a small 32-acre lake with some of the most unique, detailed, and well-preserved pictographs in Northwestern Ontario. In 2008 the Thunder Bay Field Naturalists purchased 108 acres of land surrounding the lake, creating the Painted Rock Nature Reserve. The area is a unique biological site with mature forests, wetlands, and rare plants. The actual age of the pictographs is unknown, but they are thought to be hundreds of years old. These pictographs are featured on the cover of the book Indian Rock Paintings of the Great Lakes by Selwyn Dewdney and Kenneth Kidd. The pictographs at this site are of national significance.

Common Raven
Corvus corax
Location: Thunder Bay, Ontario. Canada
Notes: One of my favourite birds. The raven is a large, all-black passerine bird. It is the most widely distributed member of the crow family (corvids) across the Northern Hemisphere. In many cultures, ravens are seen as spiritual creatures, often linked to mysticism and prophecy throughout human history. They symbolize deep wisdom, transformation, and the connection between the physical and spiritual worlds. Of all the North American Indigenous teachings, the seven Grandfather Teachings are the most commonly shared from coast to coast. The raven or “gaagaagi” in Ojibwe it represents honesty, one of the seven teachings. The raven accepts what it is and knows how to use its gift. It does not seek the power, speed or beauty of others. The raven uses what it has been given to survive and thrive. Within other Indigenous symbolism, the raven helps the people and shapes their world for them. The raven can also sometimes be seen as a trickster in some cultures.

Rocks and Grass Painting
Location: Simpson Island, Lake Superior, Ontario. Canada
Notes: Simpson Island is about 5 km (3 mi.) from the mainland and approximately 13 km (8 mi.) southwest of the hamlet of Rossport. It is the fourth largest island in Lake Superior, with an area of 73 square km (18,040 acres). The island consists of volcanic Basalt, Diabase, Sandstone and Orthoquartzite with Limestone. The volcanic rock of the southern shore is exposed to the constant action of the lake's waves. This watercolour painting is of a plant growing amongst the volcanic rock eroded by the lake's wave action and cracked by the winter ice.
